I gave up on the dual hard drive idea. Money's getting REALLY tested and I'm pushed into the 1200 region. I don't get a lot of viruses anyway; Even if I did I can deal with them easily.

Speakers, 10 bucks. I'm not fussy about music. Keyboards, 18 bucks. Mouse, I went for a decent one. 30 bucks.

Does anyone know a good, REALLY cheap, 19-inch moniter? The decent one I found on Tigerdirect was 139.99.
Do not skimp on the monitor. Get a 20" at least and with a decent resolution (1600x900 at 16:9, or 1680x1050 at 16:10).

A good quality 500-550W power supply is fine for a 95W CPU and a Radeon 4850. What kind of system are you building? Have you decided on i7 or Phenom II?

I understand you're strapped for cash - but if you're looking for 1TB storage you might as well go with two drives in RAID 0.

A WD Caviar Green 1TB is $100. You can get 2x Caviar Black 640GB for $140. Thats 1.28TB of storage plus you get double the speed and double the bandwidth of a single drive. Well worth the extra.

I strongly advise going with two drives in RAID 0.

Also - unless you're overclocking, you won't need any case fans at all. If you want to save; don't bother with case fans.

I found a 19" 2ms Widescreen LCD moniter for 139.99, and I'm pretty happy with that.

I decided on an i7. There's a micro center nearby and I can pick it up for at least 40 bucks less.

You can get alot more out of your setup with a better monitor. Your hardware is overkill for a 1440x900 19" monitor.

It's fine though. You're future-proofed now you can always upgrade your monitor later on.

How would caching more reduce performance? If you were able to cache the entire drive into RAM, you'd have one dang fast computer. So how is it that 6GB is slower than 4GB? Do you still have the article?

1) No. People on here are always power supply crazy. A 500w, or even a good 400w would do you just fine for now, with the hardware you have spec'd out.

Good call. Though I'll be surprised if you can still keep it under $1,000, you just can't go wrong with an i7.

For 1000 bucks, you can get a pretty awesome Quad system, and I would if I was you. For your graphics card, you might want to get something beefier than a 9600GT. I bought one because it was cheap, and now I'm kind of regretting it, because there's a lot better for just a bit more. For the Hard drives, having two is for sure a good idea. On one, keep your OS installed, and on the other, keep all your Media such as movies, pictures, and music etc. I've been doing this for about a year, and it's very helpful.

Q9550
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P
Xigmatek Dark Knight
G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2 1066
Corsair 650W
HD 4870
500GB Hard drive
DVD Burner
Cooler Master 690

Grand Total (Before MIR) = $960 (Give or take a few for shipping)
Grand Total (After MIR) = $905

Sure, it could be better for 1000 bucks, but I guarantee you this will top any game out right now, accept for maybe Crysis, but who plays that for gaming entertainment anyways Also, you can save a few bucks, and that's always good.

This is my "final" specs. I'm still trying to hack down the prices, though. Any suggestions?

Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit at newegg $159.99
Mouse Logitech MX518 at newegg $39.99
Intel Core i7 Nehalem 2.66ghz $229.99, pickup at micro center
Gskill 6gb ram (3x2gb) at newegg $89.99
DVD-R burner at newegg $21.99, after savings $17.00
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard at newegg $199.99, after rebate $184.99
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB SATA 7200 RPM 32MB Buffer Hard Drive at zipzoomfly $84.89
NZXT Guardian 921 at newegg $79.99, after rebate $59.99
Cyber Acoustics computer speaking system at newegg $9.99
Kensingston Black keyboard standard at newegg $17.99
OCZ StealthStream600w at newegg $79.99, after rebate $69.99
LG WI952 TQ-TF Black 19” 2ms Widescreen LCD Moniter at newegg $139.99, pickup at best buy

Newegg purchase (+shipping to 22101): $721.10
Zpizoomfly purchase (no shipping): $84.89
Processer, pickup at Micro center: $229.99
Moniter, pickup at Best Buy: $ 139.99

Grand Total (with tax): $1194.45

I can live without sound quality and keyboard just needs to be convenient. Mouse, I went for a good one.

Can I degrade the powersupply to a 500w?

I would look at the ATI lineup for a video card... I believe they're the king of performance/price currently, especially for midrange cards. Look at the 4770 and 4850.

Will possibly add more specific build info later on... we'll see.

The GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R is a great board, offers lots of standards Gigabyte has been known for and offers sli and Xfire. so it will leave both upgrade paths open for you. Plus with the i7 setup, you can get a decent ram kit for the same price if not cheaper then the 8 gig kit, and get better performance. Just my three cents.

Whats wrong with Msi?,... I love my mobo,.. besides the D-led its great
