Yes, a 500w will do just fine. I would also go with a 4770 instead of the 4850. Benchmarks show they are about on par with each other (+/- 5%), and the 4770 is much cheaper.

Also, MS keyboards are really cheap on newegg. <$10 if I remember right.

Ummm, other than that, I can't really see any other places to cut costs. That should get you closer to $1,100 with tax though.

Also, I don't see an OS... do you have plans for that already?

EDIT: Here's a generic 500w power supply for $19.99, but lots of 5-egg reviews on the egg. Worth checking out. I know people here are going to shoot me for suggesting anything but the best for a power supply, but I'm a believer in saving money, and when you're on a budget, you're on a budget. Besides, with 56 people saying it's a decent power supply, it's pretty good odds you won't have any trouble with it. It does 16A on the 12v rail, and you only need ~7A for a 4770, ~9A for a 4850.

EDIT2: Nevermind on that last power supply - it doesn't come with the requisite 6-pin connector. You could always buy an adapter, but I'd probably just buy a little better power supply instead. I'll see if I can find another that might be decent.

EDIT3: Here's a good Rosewill power supply. Rosewill is reputable enough. This is 5-eggs from over 300 people, so you should be fine. It's got all the connectors you'll need for your build.

Keep the 600w. Your build could run on a 500w but its nice to always have headroom.

I'm getting close. I increased the graphics card to 4870, and the power supply to 600w; but seriously; even if I'm playing crysis max for like 10 hours do I need it?

I'm pretty happy with the price now. But if there's any convenient way to hack it down, I'm all ears.

BTW I know that I should get a better moniter but 1) My desk is tiny, and a bigger monitor means that I have to keep it in the basement, and I really want to keep it in my room (weekend gaming marathons :P) 2) I need to be able to slide the screen/keyboard/mouse into the corner of my desk against the wall when I'm not using it, but I can't see that happening easily with a 22 inch. I'm using a 17inch dell screen, complete with 512mb ram and 80gb hard drive desktop right now; I think I can live with a brand spanking new 19-inch LCD.

AND the OS. If my friend is getting the comp he wants from dell, then he gets a vista home premium CD. He was going to chuck it for XP 64-bit, and now he's giving me the CD for free. I'll just stick with Vista until Windows 7 comes out.

Looks good, but you won't be able to use the OS key/cd from your friend's Dell. It will only work with a Dell motherboard, and usually tied to a specific model or product line as well.

If you wanted to cut back even a little, you could skip the Vapour-X, and just get a regular non-reference cooled 4870, you are mainly paying for the branding "Vapour-X". Also, you should go for a 500GB HDD unless you are a media junky. If you are a gamer, with an average media collection (like 100-300 movies, and like 10k-20k songs), then you can easily get by with a 500GB, and have room to spare for games

go with a Q9400, Gigabyte UD3P, 8 GB Ram, 1 500 GB hard drive and a 74 GB Raptor. than 2 4850 or 70s in crossfire!

this will save you money instead of going i7.
