he has a Core i7 with a 4870 (maxes games @ 1920*1080) and a fairly decent system, enough to beat your Q9400 offerings. Also, the raptors are outdated and slow compared to many drives today. The velociraptors are the updated, faster versions, but the raptors are bad.

My friend ranted about how nvidia is so much better than radeon, that radeon is second-class, and that radeon isn't compatible with a lot of games, blah blah blah...?

slap ur friend plz... some ppl are nvidia fanboys some are ati fanboys

the smart ppl buy the most performance they can get for the money

at this price point you are looking at a gtx 260 or a 4870... i think the 4870 wins in most games but its close on everything

personally for a pure gaming machine i would put more into ur graphics and less into your cpu... the i7 920 is a great deal right now but the 250 dollar motherboards kill it... half of your budget is eaten by a cpu/mobo

i would just kill the i7 and get the cheapest quad you can find (q8200 or some amd thing) along with a bigger monitor and better video card

the only reason i say go quad is because gta 4 and some other new games are running 4 threads

but other than that cpu doesent matter for gaming... someone did a test on here a few days ago playing crysis with an i7... he disabled 2 cores and downclocked it to 1ghz lol... left the video card the same and he only lost like 1 fps

it really made me change my mind about going i7.... my cpu is 3 years old and its still great for games... my graphics card plays everything well but i should have gotten a better one hindsight 20/20

this is from a gamer standpoint tho... most ppl here are enthusiast whatever

im personally going to ride 775 till the wheels fall off... i wonder how long this 6600 will last at 3.6 haha 3 years and counting

hopefully they dont change to like PCI-X 3.0 and make us all get new boards... **** i just gave them an idea lol

I'm pretty happy with the price now. But if there's any convenient way to hack it down, I'm all ears.

BTW I know that I should get a better moniter but 1) My desk is tiny, and a bigger monitor means that I have to keep it in the basement, and I really want to keep it in my room (weekend gaming marathons :P) 2) I need to be able to slide the screen/keyboard/mouse into the corner of my desk against the wall when I'm not using it, but I can't see that happening easily with a 22 inch. I'm using a 17inch dell screen, complete with 512mb ram and 80gb hard drive desktop right now; I think I can live with a brand spanking new 19-inch LCD.

AND the OS. If my friend is getting the comp he wants from dell, then he gets a vista home premium CD. He was going to chuck it for XP 64-bit, and now he's giving me the CD for free. I'll just stick with Vista until Windows 7 comes out.
