Hello,

I'm really new to this whole computer and overclocking business, but I think it can be pretty enjoyable once I get a gaming computer.
Anyways, here's a list of parts that I thought would be needed in order to build a decent gaming rig.

Here's the list:

This list adds up to being $730.
Could you tell me how good the list is? Can it be OC'ed? If so, to what extent?

I was also wondering if I could lower the whole cost of the PC.. I wanted to buy a keyboard and mouse, as well.

if you are only into gaming. u got the right specs except for the video card u should try going GTX260.. just hunt for the prices on newegg.. i got mine for 165$ shipped

I threw something together that costs about the same after rebates, but it has a quad core and a GTX 260.



It comes out to $777, but has $55 in rebates, bringing it to $722. I forgot to add a CD burner (just hit me), but it will only cost $10 more then your original build and you get a lot more bang out of the build.

^^ i'd keep the corsair PSU, plus the 650 watt would be good for an extra 260 later

Could also go AMD and get a cheap tri core but seems like you want intel so I won't bother you with that.

EDIT: For the hard drive, switch to the 500GB Caviar Black, less storage but its a faster drive and it's the same price. Also you can get an XFX 4850 for only $135.

720 Black Edition is a good base...

I'd also agree with the 720BE. And get the Gigabyte 790x board to go along with it.

Thanks to everyone who helped! I have a couple questions to the responses that I got.

1.) The Quad Core/mobo bundle seems VERY interesting.. But will that processor overclock well with the given mobo in the bundle?? I heard that in order for a processor to OC well, the mobo has to work well with the processor..

2.) I actually don't have a preference when it comes to AMD or Intel. So if you have suggestions, just let me know. The only preference I have is price to performance ratio.
If another build works better for the same price, or a little less for cheaper, I would like to know definitely! So how is the 720 BE? Could you perhaps give me a bit more explanation?

3.) I'm definitely keeping the Corsair 650W. And am switching to the 500GB Caviar, thanks to LXcivic2k1. But, as for the XFX4850, I was considering that or the EVGA 9800 for the longest time... Do you think the 4850 is a better card???

4.) "i would suggest a 260 core 216... way more bang for the buck" If this is true, then do you recommend a mobo to go along with it??

I would go for an Intel build because I'm an Intel guy, but that's just me. That board got some good reviews, and one person said that they overclocked their Q6600 to 3.0ghz. It's also an ASUS board, so you get some reliability. You can also change out the power supply for the Corsair 650 for only $40 more.

Also, if I plan on adding all of these things PART by PART, how should my list be prioritized??
By "part by part" I mean that I already have a computer but am planning on buying all of these parts SEPARATELY. But I will end up with all of these parts at the end..

So could you please help me prioritize the list as to which part(s) I should get first, then second, etc etc. I thought maybe the video card was the top priority if I'm buying all of them separately, but I don't know for sure..
