I7 Build questions - Overclock.net

Hello to all members,

I am planning an I7 build ( yes I know, another one! ) and I would appreciate your indulgence and comments as this is all pretty new to me.

ok, first off, I may be looking at options that are way beyond what my present needs are and I am aware of this but I do enjoy the high end stuff and thruth be told it usually last's a bit longer before you have to upgrade.

The first question I have since I seem to have read myself into total confusion, if you go with I7 and let's say a 965, is water cooling mandatory? If I am not going to over clock for a while, is air sufficient? I would not wish to buy an expensive chip and end up burning it since everybody here agrees it runs hot.

The next question, I was looking into the Antec 1200 case. I have always liked bigger cases but will this one sound like an airplane? I have seen other suggestions such as Haf 932, CM Sniper but if Antec is not too loud I would consider it.

The next one gets down to the motherboard, here is where it gets confusing.

Asus P6T6 Revolution
Asus P6T6 Deluxe 2
Asus Rampage Extreme II
EVGA Classified X58

I do a lot of video editing, CS3 and CS4 type work and was planning on 2 4870 or 295's.

Last question for now, for the power unit do I have to go 1000W?

Antec 1200 is great for air cooling you will be able to adjust the fans speed on the case. So you are fine
if you are going for 2 295's yes you will need a 1000watt power supply

I would get the one of the Asus board

The rampage and classified are meant for enthusiast overclocking. I would get a 920 with d0 stepping it is cheaper plus they are better overclockers then the 965. A stock cooler will be fine if you don't plan to overclock

Yeah i would go with one of the ASUS boards, unless you are willing to spend money on the classified. but for what you would be using it for, ASUS will be just fine.

Like he said, stock coolers will be just fine for what you use, but if/when you overclock, you might want to consider getting an aftermarket cooler.

The antec 1200 is a nice case really big but not very wide...I went with the haf cause it was wider..
I also went with the Rampage 2 and I love this board.
1000watt is perfect this way you dont have to worry about upgrading it nomatter what you choose to add to your settup.
And my haf isnt loud at all.

If it was my build, I would go for the ASUS p6t6 revolution, core i7 920, with a corsiar HX1000 PSU. Since you're not going for the edge overclock, I wouldn't reccomend the Classified, because you won't be pushing it that much. My vote for the GPUs would be the GTX 295's incase you ever start folding.

It took me a while to get back since I was researching your recommendations and trying to figure out the next steps.

So far here is what I have and the enormous question list after

Antec 1200 case
1 side fan + 1 middle fan
I decided to go with the Antec although the CoolerMaster Haf932 is also an interesting selection. I noticed there wil be a radiator available for the Antec 1200 if I ever decide to watercool

The PSU: Corsair HX1000W Modular

Motherboard: for a difference of 60$ between the P6T6 revolution and the Rampage 2 extreme I will go with the Rampage extreme 2 ( hope this makes sense)

CPU: 920 with d0 stepping

Memory: Here is am torn I noticed many options in Corsair Dominator ranging from 2000 down to 1600, some with fans and some without. What would be your recommendation, I wish to have at a start at least 12 gig. Will I see much of a difference between let's say the 1600 and the 1866 apart form depleting the bank account?

I will get the CPU cooler as indicated: But which one?
CoolerMaster V10
CoolerMaster V8 or
Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme 1366 RT or any other that may be better?

Video cards now have me at a loss. I have looked into them the Saphire or Diamond
Radeon HD 4870 1 gig,
Radeon HD 4870 2 gig,
Radeon HD 4890 1 gig ( 2 options )

The GTX 295 from Asus and EVGA

What do you recommend, I wish to use two cards but what would be better?
for the GTX since I will get ASUS mobo is the GTX 295 EVGA compatible? Do I get with or with out back plate if 295 is the way to go.

I am not sure I understand the difference between the GDDR3 for the GTX 295 and GDDR5 for the Radeon, will it make a difference?

I know there are a lot of questions but any insight or help would be appreciated.

Look into the Promalitech Megahalem CPU cooler. Its the best for I7 atm.
The RAM mhz doens't differ much, not really much gain from it.

If I were you then I would go with 285 in SLI. Less worry about quad scaling

My case vote goes obviously (see sig) to the HAF 932

Can you point me to a link for this. The Biggest rad I've seen internally for an Antec 1200 is a 240mm mounted in the front at the expense of two HDD cages. The Antec 1200 isn't an ideal internal watercooling case, but it is nice for mounting radiators on the back with the precut tube holes.

The best budget option/best option in general IMO for ram, is this OCZ 1600mhz cas7 12gb Kit for $170 after MIR. No Fan

and after that it gets alot more expensive with almost no more return. 1600mhz at great timings will do about the same as faster ram (1800mhz) with slower timings (cas9).

For CPU Cooler, I agree Inktfish the Prolimatech Megahalem is the king of Air Cooling, and I would pair it with a San Ace 120 Fan Note that you will need to buy the 38mm fan clip when you order the Megahalem

The EVGa cards will work in the ASUS motherboard. All they do is pretty much put a sticker on. However, the backplate for the GTX 295's from EVGa does lower temps significantly and is worth the extra money IMO.

The memory difference isn't really noticeable at this point yet. The speeds for GDDR5 are faster, but it's not really showing much improvement over the GDDR3 on the GTX 295's. I vote for EVGa GTX 295's with the backplate.
