Default Budget Build for my family.

So my parent's and sister's computer is TERRIBLE.

Quote:
CPU: Intel® Celeron® D Processor 356
(3.33GHz, 533MHz FSB, 512KB L2 cache) Operating System: Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP Home SP2

Chipset: ATI Radeon™ Xpress 200 Memory: 512MB DDR (1 × 512MB) 400MHz (PC3200)
Expandable to 2GB Hard Drive: 160GB (7200rpm, 2MB cache)1 Optical Drives: 16x multiformat dual-layer DVD±RW
(Up to 8.5GB with dual-layer media)
Write max: 16x DVD±R, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+RW, 4x DVD+R DL, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW
Read max: 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-ROM Media Reader: 9-in-1 Digital Media Manager™ (Memory Stick®, Memory Stick Pro®, MultiMediaCard™, Secure Digital™, CompactFlash®, MicroDrive, SmartMedia, xD-Picture Card™, USB 2.0) Video: ATI Radeon™ X300-based integrated graphics
Up to 128MB of shared video memory
PCI-Express® (PCI-E x16) slot available Sound: 6-channel (5.1) high-definition audio Network: 10/100Mbps integrated Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 port) Modem: 56K ITU v.92-ready fax/modem (RJ-11 port) Peripherals: Standard multifunction keyboard, 2-button wheel mouse, amplified stereo speakers (USB powered) Ports/Other: 5 USB 2.0 (1 in front, 4 in back), VGA external connector, serial port, parallel port, 2 PS/2 ports (keyboard and mouse), 5 audio ports (2 in front, 3 in back)
Yeah...

So anyway, I'm building them a new computer and I'm going to put Windows 7 on it.

I'm reusing the DVDROM/CDRW from the eMachine to keep the price under $200.

Does everything look alright? My only concern is the RAM.

The board is says it can only have RAM at 667 so I'm hoping that this RAM will just be downclock am I right?

The RAM will work fine, the board will automatically boot it at the lowest settings.

Intel Atom for a desktop? That's brutal, I wouldn't want an atom processor unless it's for one of those tiny netbooks.

Let's take a look at a better combo.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.194986

You'll need a cheap cooler to go with that OEM processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103050

Black Steel MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case 400W Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811190072

Grand total for these parts is $237 Shipped.
You said you would re-use the old CD drive, and you can add the HDD in your original post. It's a bit more than your original budget but you and your family will be more satisfied in the long run!

Thanks for the recommendation, but I'm pretty set on buying the Atom. The 330 is the dual core HT which will be way more then enough to browse the internet, listen to music, and open up word.

Hell, the 230n Acer Aspire plays Unreal Tournament at ~50 FPS. So I'm sure even videos won't really be a problem. If it is, I'll pick up a cheap 5200 or something like that.

This is a good setup for your family. If there will be no gaming or gpu intensive programs being run you could take the graphics card off the list and use the onboard graphics of the motherboard. That would bring the price down by $40.

its architecture puts its actual power around a socket 478 and between the Core solos if i remember correctly.

So power wise its right on par with what you had... i would think

I could be wrong, but I think the celeron-d would be better than an atom.

EDIT: Take a look at this comparison.
