My coworker has a 17" dell precision laptop with the quadro (office) version of 8800M I believe, a 2.4Ghz C2D (whatever T series that is), and 4GB of ram. Has an hour battery life, usually won't boot without the power plugged in, and it's ridiculously heavy.
You mentioned mobility being key, a 17" laptop is not mobile no matter what components it has. Barely fits in a backpack. Get a killer i7 rig for $1700, and get a good M1330 or M1550 for $700.

I like the desktop and laptop ideas.
$1600 for an i7 rig should be WAY more than enough, and spending $900 on a laptop means you can get a decent laptop.

you can get an 8600M or 9600M laptop with 4GB ram for the prices we suggested. Those will run all current games with mid to high graphics decently.

I would NOT let my kid date at 14 yrs old...too young for that kind of action, even though there is plenty of stupid kids and parents that don't care. Not saying this is you, but just in general.

Besides that, that money is good to spend going out O_O. But really, I dunno $2500 seems like overkill for a 14 year olds gaming rig call me jealous because thats just a bit lower than what I am spending on my own rig :P But I have uses for the rig beyond gaming, hah!
