Übertakten FTW!

Hey guys!
__________________Since my nf4 chipset is slowly dying (it's fan broke and the BIOS warning was off), I don't see the point in investing money into buying a new S754 mobo, which are scarce anyway. So I decided to get a whole new Intel setup, and may need some guiding, as I haven't been into PC builds for quite some time now, and my knowledge about the new hardware is slightly limited. My current setup idea is: -XFX 780i SLI -Intel Q9550 C1 -OCZ Platinum Low Voltage PC2-9600U -Palit/XpertVision GeForce GTX 260 Sonic 216 SP Cooling: -TRUE + 2x Scythe Ultra Kaze 3000 -Thermalright HR-05 IFX + SilverStone FM82 (NB) -Thermalright HR-05 IFX/SLI + SilverStone FM82 (SB) -2x Thermalright HR-09 Type 4 (MOSFET) -2x Thermalright HR-07 + 1x SilverStone FM82 (RAM) -Thermalright HR-03 GTX + Scythe Ultra Kaze 3000 (GPU) Taking over from my current rig: -beQuiet Straight Power 450W -HDD's & DVD-RW Originally I was going for an A8400, since I wanted to limit my budget and reach the magical 4GHz for 24/7 usage. But as I will be folding and benching, I was told to go with a decent quad. I'm just not sure if this setup will be able to make a Q9550 reach 4GHz. I am also not sure what to do about a case. I am currently using a stripped down and slaughtered Chieftech, and received an A+case GM3 desktopas a birthday present, as I wanted to make the current system into an HTPC. I'm probably going to stuff everything into that one, see how it works, and if it's insufficient, later on get a Lian-Li PC-P50 plus some more Scythe Kazes. The second GTX 260 would then have to wait a bit longer. What do you guys think of the idea?

I would recheck the specs on your CPU and GPU, you may not be able to run those, much less overclock them on a 450W PSU (even if it's the bestest ever) without HAVOC ensuing.
You're probably safe with a decent 650W (Newegg had the Corsair 650W for $99.99, last I checked) as long as they can push the amps. It's a great looking build, lots of tinkering potential. Good luck and PIX PLEASE!

One thing for sure is to get a new psu. The OCed 45nm quad may take up to 200w depending on the vcore/speed. The gtx260 126 is a 182w GPU. With another stuff in your list, you need a soild 600w psu (Corsair 650tx) that can do 45a on 12v. A solid 750w psu that can do 58a on 12v for sli.

I was actually skeptical about my current PSU, thanks for the confirmation. As I do want to go SLI later on, will the Corsair HX850W be sufficient? It has 70amps on the 12V rail, six 8pin PCIe connectors and is modular (which is important to me): http://www.corsair.com/products/hx850/default.aspx

Yes. The hx850 has plenty of power for your rig. If you don't need a modular psu, take a look at the 850tx. This may save some money toward to other components.

I like clean setups, so I'd prefer having removable cables (if unneeded). That's worth the extra 20€ for me, but still thanks for the heads up

Are you sure you don't want an Intel Core I7 setup?
Also personally I'm not very fond of Intel nVidia chipsets, I prefer a solid P45.

Price between that S775 setup vs i7 is rougly 150$ give or take. No brainer to me.. If you have to get S775 though, the Gigabyte UD3 series would be the best with the Asus P5Q's being my 2nd choice.

High end 1336 stuff is still too pricey for me, IMO. I can get the XFX 780i board for 120€, and I plan on SLI'ing later on. The RAM costs less than 70€, top notch DDR3 is much pricier.
