Cool *!56k* Mini Me (P180B->Mini P180 Worklog)

Background (Reason for Upgrading):

So I was tired of my previous rig. It was a few years old and had some quirks (wouldnt come out of sleep, x-fi would crackle because of PCI bus interference, not powerful enough for Q6600 overclocking) and decided to upgrade.

The time was right and I had some things working for me. First, one of my good friends hit me up with 6Gb of free ram, which was awesome. Also, Microcenter had that wicked i7 920 deal going on. Finally, I found an open box Rampage II Gene.

So therefore, I present to you, my Mini conversion!

Build Goals and Parts:

I occasionally LAN and bring my system to my in-law's place for weekends of gaming with my brother in laws. Because of this, my P180B was not working out so well, it was just too darn big! So I layed out what I wanted in this build.
  • Smaller form factor
  • Much better airflow
  • Designed for overclocking
  • Neat cable management
Given those goals, I ended up speccing out the following stuff to save money:
  • Intel i7 920 w/ Vendetta 2 ($199 from Microcenter)
  • ASUS Rampage II Gene ($169 at Newegg, OB)
  • VisionTek 4870 w/HR-03 (Already had)
  • 6Gb Corsair XMS DDR3 @ 1333 (Free, via awesome friend)
  • X-fi Fatal1ty w/ Front Panel (Already had)
  • Silverstone ST750 (Already had)
  • Mini P180B ($80 from Newegg)

Build Photos and Descriptions:

This case is awesome. The black poweder-coating and improved cuts in the case for routing cables is such an upgrade from the original P180. I removed the drive cages and ran my single HDD in the upper drive bay. My optical and sound card will be in the lower two bays. I dont use the dvd-rom much at all, and only use the sound card at LANs, so I dont feel the location is bad.

The Rampage II Gene is just a wicked board. The packaging was awesome and, despite being open box, had everything in its original packaging. Something I learned with m P5W-DH Deluxe is that the extras of the "Deluxe" motherboards are sometimes not worth the extra cost.

While the P5W's wifi was great, I rarely used the dual LAN and never used the sound card or the wireless remote.

Getting the GENE is nice because it comes with 3dmark06 and Kaspersky AV. But I dont feel like I paid for features I wouldn't use.

The north bridge is AWESOME.

Here is me getting the PSU cables wired up. My cat is helping me (Oh hai! I just routed joor cablez)

To reduce clutter behind the back of the case, I took the liberty of chopping off unused PSU connectors. Luckily, I spoke with a Silverstone rep to get replacements before I hacked them up. I am really happy with the amount of copper I removed from the cables. I only use the connectors I NEED!

Note that this setup DOESN'T WORK! The HR-03 is huge and took up all the slots in the motherboard (even PCI at bottom). I needed my X-fi installed, so I had to convert it to a different config.

Again, this setup doesn't work. The darn CPU cooler is too big to fit with the newly remounted HR-03.

Eventually I settled on this. I think its the best config I could have come up with, given the circumstances. Now the cpu cooler pulls up and the 200mm big boy fan pushes it out of the case. The HR-03 has its own fan to both pull air from the CPU and push air thru the CPU cooler. I know that a lot of heat from the GPU may mess with CPU temps, though. Unfortunately...

Here is my test bench on build day. The day of my build it was about 82-83 in my apartment. Hot.

In the end, I am fairly happy with the results. I will certainly continue to improve things. here is a short list of what I want to do:
  1. Cool the VRM on the 4870. While the core only gets to about 47-48C under furmark load, the VRMs skyrocket to 90-100C after only a few minutes. I have IanH heatsinks on them now, and the ramsinks with the HR-03 kit, but its just not enough. Even the intake 120mm fans on full blast dont help enough.
  2. I want to replace the NB thermal interface material with AS5. Honestly I had planned to do this but I forgot ;*(. It's going to be a HUGE pain to do.
  3. Gotta continue to improve cabling. The bottom right of the motherboard is a mess in my opinion. It really should be better than that.
  4. The back panel is white. I really want to paint it black or put some black material over it so the whole back panel blends into the powder-coating.
  5. Need longer SATA cables for easier routing (24", probably). I tried to make them exactly the length they need to be, but I didn't leave myself any room for routing.
  6. Front panel cables that I dont use need to be removed (eSATA, Audio, etc...)
I hope you enjoyed my build log, now it's time to stop building and start playing some games!

Nice job! I was thinking of doing same thing but with a Phenom II 955.

see about attatching a fan right above where your gpu is... would help keep mem/vrms cool
and, enzotech sinks are pretty nice, you could stick them on your vrms i bet

Awesome case huh?
My only gripe is the plastic side panels.
Oh and the fact that I STILL haven't figured out how those dumb disc drive rails work.

You're lucky you only have one hard drive though.

Haha I upgrades the same as you. Microcenter i7 and open box GENE. I love my setup.

Currently I have the Antec 300 but plan to jump to the P180 and water cool. Should be fun.

Yeah, this case is awesome. It's REALLY heavy. Actually, I have a P180B water cooled but eventually got rid of it for various reasons. Still, I have seen a few mini P180 on water and its a beautiful sight. Good luck!

Nice build, I've always wanted a mini

I just found somewhere selling them for £55, I'm sat here trying to think of excuses to build a second rig now

Yeah, after having the system for two weeks I can say this is far and away a more complete and professional build.

The case is amazing to work with, albeit a little small. The components are all top notch and everything just seems to work together. it's nice having that for once
