Default Perfect time to buy-- or wait?

I just unexpectedly sold my macbook pro for $1800 if I accept the offer... I was going to wait until christmas when the new ATI cards will be out (and likely new CPU's from AMD and Intel???)

With a $1700 budget I could have a pretty badass i7 920 build... I know how many of you feel about waiting for technology and the never-ending spiral of delaying builds for new hardware releases.... but assuming i am in no hurry to build this rig, what options would be available to me should I wait for christmas?

Honestly, if I build now the prices for the high end video cards are very very reasonable. If anything I could just sell whatever card I choose now and upgrade for a couple hundred bucks (if it is worth it) in december... So as far as CPU/mobo/RAM, will there be a big update between now and christmas or just minor improvements to the current high end lineup from intel and amd?

Now to the age old question, build now or wait?

----
p.s. system in my sig is now my brother's rig not the macbook pro i would be replacing

two more questions,
What makes the i7 920 better than the x4 955 clocked similiarly? Amount of cache? Obviously an AMD CPU/mobo build would be a lot cheaper allowing me to get a better HD and GPU if I went that route...

and how do i know if the i7 920 is a d0? Is the one from newegg d0?

You don't know until you get it. Some stores offer guaranteed D0 for a higher price, some don't. You could go to a local store and actually see the box with the batch number and things on, pay more from another store or take the chance.

If you keep on waiting, you will never upgrade. What if the next series turns out to be a flop and you just went all this time when you could have had a computer?

Get an i7 920, a 4890/GTX 275, and a nice motherboard and you'll be set for a while. If anything, you'll only need to upgrade your GPU. Barely any games stress 8 threads fullly now, so there's no point in getting a new processor.

If you want to build, go ahead and build. Personally, I am waiting on piecing together my new AM3 build until Nov. and black friday. There WILL be TONS of deals to be had. And they're usually better than the ones at Christmas time.

I say wait worst that can happen newer stuff sucks, and so what then the things you already had plained to buy will just be a tad bit cheaper, its always nice to wait if you can.
when your on a budget things only get cheaper which means you can buy nicer hardware.
