So it'd be okay for a week until I can get something better?

I'd suppose so. I think you are barely even breaking 175w with your current setup so it should be a piece of cake even for a low quality 700w.

I just really don't trust the apevia. Is there a possibility of it dying and taking other parts with it?

That's always a possibility. But look at it this way, you won't be pushing the PSU to it's limits at all which is when it is more likely to fail.

I decided to try out the apevia psu as a temporary solution.
The second I press the power button, the fans start spinning for a split second, then the surge protector turns off and I have to press the reset button on the outlet to get it to turn on again. Also, the motherboard's power led doesn't light up when the computer is plugged in. My guess is that the psu is defective, which means I can't sell it. There's $40 down the drain. One of my relatives said he might have a 500w antec laying around, which should work great. My only regret is buying a 700w psu for $50 (it was 50% off, but still).

I can, but I'd rather not pay for shipping and such. If anything, I'll take off the sleeving and use it to sleeve the antec psu my relative has.

Can someone who's an expert with this sort of thing tell me what might be happening here? I'm definitely going to get a new psu, I'm just kind of curious.

I'm no "expert" But Ive taken a few classes on electrical engineering.
__________________First, if I where you, I would verify it is the psu, and not a shorted component in the pc. If you take the psu out of the computer and disconnect all of the cables you can still get it to run. You need to bridge the Green wire that is in the 24 pin connector with a surrounding black wire, any one will do. A paperclip works great for this. Once they are bridged, plug the psu into the AC utility source and see if the same thing happens.
