Go for it. But make every dollar count.

You will be far better off getting a cheaper platform (eg PHII+dual channel DDR3+ cheaper board or C2Q+dual channel DDR2+cheaper board) and spending the savings on more graphics horsepower. You could easily get another 4890 with that, or at least a 4870X2, which will give you far more FPS than an i7 + lesser graphics.

edit: and please don't refer to Lynnfield as i5; it's debuting in two i7 variants and one i5 variant, all on socket LGA1156. It's targeted at the Phenom II's really, since they are far cheaper to manufacture at a negligible performance loss compared to current Bloomfield i7's.

Yeah, don't forget that there are Core i7's for LGA1156, as well. The only differences are that there is no QPI, there's an on-die NB, and there's a dual-channel memory controller instead of a triple-channel memory controller. A P55 motherboard and either a Core i5 750 or a Core i7 860 might be a great platform for a $1000 budget.

I don't think that's the best way to explain it... The i7's and i5's on 1156 use completely different buses, have different IMC's and have integrated PCIe lanes. The only similarity is microarchitecture (Nehalem), Turbo, and in the case of i7 (i5's don't have it), HT.

if your going cheaper im telling you right now when it comes to cpu performance in game it would not matter too much once you hit 3ghz on a quad core, maybe a bit more say if you do gtaiv but still not that much. you probably would get a much better fps per buck if you went with a 955, wait till the dx11 cards come out and get a 4870x2 or something. then again you also have to consider what size screen will you be gaming on. if its on say 1440x900 or lower i doubt that you would need that high of a gpu, a gtx260core216 would be perfect for a res like that but then again as i said it all depends

So you jump out there and get an am3 setup and you're running crossfire. But wait! You just saw some smoking Nvidia cards and you wanna run those in SLI, but wait! You can't because you're mobo only supports CF, so now you gotta buy a completely different mobo, and sell your CF cards!

When it comes to gaming, and longevity, go with Intel. You're going to pay xxx$ for the 920, and a year from now you're going to smile and say "I'm still getting my moneys worth." You got bigger performance, better variety, and easier overclocking with Intel. A noob monkey from planet Zorkon could overclock intel in 5 minutes with their setups now. Try that with AMD. Better yet, try that with the MSI 790FX-GD70 in particular.

Maybe try the MSI x58m ... I have one and it's supposed to overclock as well as the big boys. Does SLI + crossfire and has all the major features you could want. Also $60 cheaper than that evga board.

I would say for the price he's already paying, go $20 and get the Bloodrage. "THE" x58 motherboard to oc with.

For max performance right now and if "upgradeability" is not a concern in the near future; why not consider a Q9550 which beats an i7 when it comes to gaming performance. This means you save money on the CPU, MB, and RAM combined!! And at the same time you have a CPU that will perform well for at least a year or so.

Q9550 for $219
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115041

Awesome Gigabyte MB for OCing $119
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128359

DDR2 for $54
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122

That's a great MB w/ good RAM and a better gaming CPU for about $200 less than an i7 and a cheap X58 setup...

...just a thought, I'm a newb

Or a Phenom II with an upgradeable socket, cheaper pricetag and just as capable gaming performance
