just in my opinion and my build experience (on my 5th self built rig now since 2001) 3 things you never want to skimp budget on is the cpu, mobo and psu... because these three components will ultimately determine your ability to upgrade hence extending the longevity of your rig... hope this helps

I would think the new ATI cards will be way to expensive. Might as well stick to a dx10 card and upgrade later.
From the benchmarks I have seen, the i5 is indeed more powerful than the Phenom II.

Where the Phenom II will pull ahead, is in multi-GPU systems. the 1156 platform is limited to 16 PCI-E lanes. The 790FX chipset on the other hand has a full 32 PCI-E lanes.

Apparently Nividia is developing a 1156 chipset, NForce 200 I think, that will allow x16 communication between cards, but is still limited to x8,x8 bandwidth to the CPU.

lol, the NF200 has been around for years now, and it's certainly not a "1156 chipset". It basically splits 8 lanes into 16, or 16 lanes into 32, effectively doubling the bandwidth.

Maybe it wasn't the NF200, but I'm pretty sure Nvidia is developing a 1156 chipset that will support faster inter-gpu communication.

P55 will be the only chipset for Lynnfield. the NF200 is an add-in chip like an onboard sound card that allows more bandwidth (effectively). The EVGA P55's i've seen have the P55 and an NF200.

He's right about the games. The performance is very close.

But then again with $1000 you can and probably should go i7.

I'd recommend a cheaper mobo like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130226, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128375 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157163).
