Ladies and Gentlemen:

It has been a while since I last posted here, but I am nearly ready to begin work on my latest build: Evolution VIII. It will consist of the following:

• Chassis: Cooler Master ATCS 840 (Black)
• Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI LE
• CPU: Intel Core i7 920
• PSU: Corsair HX850
• Memory: 2x 6GB Mushkin Redline XP3-12800
• Hard Drives: 2x 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12
• Optical: 2x LG GGW-H20L "Super Multi Blue" Blu Ray burners
• Cooling: Prolimatech Megahalems w/2x Noiseblocker M12-P fans.

I haven't included a video card because I haven't bought one yet. You see, I'm in Kuwait as I write this. I've been in Iraq for the better (or worse!) part of the last year, and have been stuck using laptops and Playstation 3 for all my gaming.

I'm holding off on buying a video card until just before I depart for the States for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, all my stuff is in Georgia, and I'm out here in the desert. I can't do anything with it. second, of course we're all anticipating the release of the GT300 and RV870, and there's a very good chance that one or both of these products will be released before I come home (Halloween-ish).

If there's nothing compelling available in my price point by the third week of October, I will be rounding out this rig with an GeForce GTX 275.

I am reserving this thread for build logs and pictures. In the meantime, feel free to post any thoughts, questions, or recommendations. See you soon!

Looks great, why do you need 2 optical drives though? Also, if you'd like room to upgrade into WC in the near future, I would go with the Cooler Master HAF-932. Just a thought. Otherwise looks great!

Hah, I knew this question would pop up. I'm putting two Blu-Ray burners in it for the simple reason being that I have them. Two of these drives were given to me somewhat randomly, so I'm just putting them to use.

As far as cooling goes, I'm an old-school air cooler, I've never been, and probably never will be captivated by water-cooling. For the longest time, I was looking at the HAF, but I ended up opting for something more subtle, perhaps a bit more elegant. It's still got 3 230mm fans, though.

Edit: The ATCS 840 does have a spot in the top that's built to hold a triple radiator, just FYI. It was built with water cooling in mind.

I considered getting a Mega Shadow, but I can't justify paying $20 more for a heatsink if it doesn't give me any performance increase!

The ATCS is a windowless case anyhow, I'm embracing the anti-bling.

So, early reports suggest that the Radeon HD 5870 might be the card to get. I haven't owned an ATI card since my X1600 Pro. I wasn't even thinking of ATI throughout the GeForce 8-series, but I have been keeping tabs on them since the RV670. It looks like this time they may have gotten it right.

Thoughts?
