Default New/old build for my dad. want your thoughts

Hello everyone,

So my Dads computer just took a major hit (lightning bolt) and to say the least its dead lol. The good news is his cdrom works fine lol. But anyway I wanted to help him out since I have a q6600, 4gs of ram, and a 640g hard drive just chillin doing nothing since I just built my i7 rig. So I want to get everyones thoughts as to which/what parts left He should get.

He is really big into editing home video's, no real gaming at all, wants some sort of HTPC type of set up. I want to keep the price down as much as possible but dont want to sacrifice too much on quality parts. He is wanting a video tuner as well but I have never done anything with video/photos, etc. on pcs. Besides playing games I work on Sun Servers so its completly out of my realm.

He wont allow me to just give him the parts and wants to buy them at a fair price (I think its a pride thing) so for the CPU, Mem, and HD what should I charge him also? I have to make sure its not too low as he will check prob lol.

so. the requirements are:

HTPC type of set up capable of video, photo, and it will reside int he living room.

The floor is yours and thanks in advance.

I would say $200 for the parts is fair, depending on the model of the ram and HD

If you love your dad, get him a nice m-atx board and an antec mini p180

As for a gpu, a 4350 will work if integrated isn't enough.

The cpu, ram, and hdd will be great. You should sell them to him at a fair price, then use some of the money to buy the rest of the components.

Hye thanks you2. Any suggestions on a tuner card and which mobo? I will go look at that antec case. Im pretty sure he will want a sep video card. I have a 8500gt sitting here but I was thinking maybe like a 8800gt. I have always stayed away from onboard GPU's if I can help it though.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I prob should not that this system will not be overclocked at all so the mobo does not need to have oc'ing in mind.

I think I will go with a tuner card from hauppauge that has a remote.

More than likely a corsair PW will be used to power the system as I blieve they are a class above most.

With the price of the 9800's does anyone think that something from ati may be in order?
