Default i5 adventures

I just got my i5 750 setup together & running Saturday, & started a little OCing yesterday.

So far i feel kinda like a n00b again, as i'm very used to OCing x775 for years now, & things are definitely different for s1156/1366.

Here are the main parts:
i5 750
Noctua NH-U12P SE2
Gigabyte P55-UD3R
G.Skill 4x2 GB DDR3-2000 Ripjaws

The new toys

new Haf 932 housing the goods

installed in the case

CPU area view

i5 750 SLBLC Batch: L929B460

CPU

P55-UD3R

UD3R beige & blue glory?

I/O headers

Intel X25-M & OCZ Agilty: can't overclock these, but they are fast enough on their own

So getting to 20x200 (4 GHz) was a piece of cake...but since then, it's been pretty rough.

LinX seems to be extremely hard to get stable, but P95 goes forever :/

4.3 GHz SuperPi (not stable)

4.2 GHz is doing fine w/ P95 Blend for a few hrs.

But those exact settings fail LinX.

I am still trying to learn the BIOS...going to take some time to figure out all the tricks.

Sweet build buddy. I can not wait to start building my i5 rig this weekend. Still waiting for Kingston (never took this long to receive something from Newegg). Originally I was going to get the UD3R but MicroCenter was out. Now that they have received some more, I'm going to exchange this UD4P (not really concern with SLI or Xfire) for the UD3R and be happy along with ya

BTW...Check out the potential of this Giga UD3R on air-cooling... http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=619607

That's nice, seems that more people are finally going i5. I've only spent a few hours messing with my rig. It's all new to me as well. Surprisingly, it overclocks really easy. Currently pushing around 4.1ghz, but the temp climbs pretty quick.

Yeah no need for the extra cost of the UD4P unless you need SLI.
As i have no interest in SLI & actually wanted a board without the nForce chip, this worked well.
Considering the disastrous track record nVidia has had with chipsets, i have zero desire to get a board containing their crap.

That review is actually one of those i read that sold me on this board
It was sub $150, & seemed to be the best option in that range other than the UD2, which was a bit sparse on some things i wanted, like only two fan headers, e.g.

Yeah they seem rather easy to OC compared to tweaking high FSB quads on s775 that's for sure.
I can't say i miss having to spend hours upon hours trying to find that magical VTT + GTLs & NB + GTL combination, haha.
For mine, it seems past 4 GHz it really starts to devour vcore for lunch, & of course temps are consequently higher...

Well, just over $1200 CND for those parts, but I used a few parts from other rigs:
HX1000
HD 4890
Intel X25-M & four 1.5 TB HDDs
DVDRW

Finally got LinX stable, yay.

I had to go down to 4.15 GHz as it seems to really need a lot of vcore to stabilize @ higher speeds, & temps are already cozy enough under load.

P55-UD3R BIOS F3f
i5 750 @ 4158 MHz (21x198) 1.38125v in BIOS
8 GB G.Skill @ DDR3-1980 9-9-97 1.64v in BIOS for now (will work on timings/vDIMM later)
