Spammist,
He definitely wants a higher-end quad core. I was debating between a Q9550 and the i7. The price difference is $20 for the CPU and about $60 for the mobo. For that, he said he'd rather go with the i7 since it is at least a little faster. Good point re the 1 TB drives. They can be had for about $70 of our greenbacks Good point re the 4830, definitely crossed my mind. Only hang-up is I don't game either (other than FSX) and I've grown to quite like the 4830. Silly huh? True, I've worked for too many companies that used business-class dells and other makes. Didn't like them, they broke all the time and repair times were pretty slow. Also cost more than 3x what I can build a similarly performing rig for. I'm confident I can deliver more performance and more reliability for less $$$. Lets just work from the assumption that I'll be building something

Just remember that this build his father wants to last at least 5 years. So an i7 would be perfect and at the price he is getting the i7 920 its perfect.

There are some Scythes that do. My Scythe Ninja works fine with my i7

Lockdown, yeah, that was my thinking. An OC'd E5200 like my sigrig would do ok for the moment, but not 2yrs from now. Also my dad is tired of waiting around for his slow computer he has now and wants something that's really fast.

Here's my recommendation then.
Server motherboard (single LGA 1366) 6GB DDR3 ECC PSU: A nice Corsair would be an excellent idea. Heatsink: Speed will remain stock, so something like a nice TRUE with a secure bolt through mount would be excellent. Combined with 2x quiet fans (like 800 RPM sythe fans) Storage can be handled by a $100 Perc 5I RAID controller, I think that should allow you to easily move to a different motherboard and recover the data in the event of motherboard failure. Case: The Lian-Li's are excellent for low noise, are very spacious, and wicked pretty. Mount a bunch of quiet 120mm fans, and it will be an excellent workstation.
