Wow, great guide--thanks a lot

Hopefully I'll be able to increase my max overclock now that I understand how the NB straps work..

Good info, though the constant use of "optical" where you should have written "optimal" got a little on my nerve. Still a rep+, though

Put a bold ed title for cooling, or at least make it stand out. It seems smashed together into the psu section. Will be back for many edits to make sure I get every comment in.

Don't take this in the wrong way, as I am only editing to make sure OCN gets the best possible guide.

1. I'd do the same for all your little section actually. Maybe bullets or something. Its a little confusing jumping around in the beginning as I am only that far. Bullet off each individual section about psu and colling etc.

2. I really like you putting in the diminishing returns thing in there. Maybe it will make some noobs realize that $400 WC setup and $600 memory is just about useless.

3."L2 Cache is largest chuck (desktop CPUs only) on memory on the CPU" Maybe change the "on memory on the cpu" to "L2 Cache is largest chunk (desktop CPUs only) of memory on the CPU

4. "Row Precharge time (tRP) and isthe number of clock"--You need a space between is and the--"Row Precharge time (tRP) and is the number of clock"

5. "These latencies has considerable effect on overall system performance." changed to "These latencies have considerable effect on overall system performance." And maybe also do not underline the whole paragraph, it makes it a little hard to read.

6. I'd suggest adding in some more talk about memory divider and examples or each. IE, 300fsb with a 4:5 divider gives your memory an actual speed of 375Mhz, rated speed of ddr2-750

7. Talk a little more about what a strap is. Include maybe some graphs of bandwidth and maybe some examples of how 398x9 > 402x9 and maybe takes until 450x9 to overcome the NB timing deficit. I'd actually copy your findings from this thread over into this soon to be FAQ.http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...p965-975x.html

8. A question I had as a noob, was how high are high voltages. Maybe list the stock voltages and then recommended maximus for each individual processor or processor speed. IE, 2.8Ghz=1.3v 3.2Ghz=1.35v. Don't forget to say that these are approximations and just to help them get started

9. I believe you missed saying that 55c is the tops for OCing? Maybe even add some recommended coolers such as BT or TT, so noobs don't go buying something that looks cool buts cant bring the gravy home to papa.

10. Maybe talk a little more about NB voltages or Vdimm voltages. How high is too high?

11.Oh, a simple addition, What do I do if my system doesnt boot, I have a p5b Deluxe or something? Tell them that they need to reset CMOS or turn of PSU

12. Maybe give vague generalizations to the maximum speed of each cas latency. ddr2-750 for 3, ddr2-1000 for 4, and the sky for 5?

13, Stress that you OC in the BIOS and not with some stupid asus OC software

Good job, clean up some of the minor errors I.E. optical, should be optimal in many places, and can this get stickied? This guide will be indespensible for C2D n00bs like me.

The Northbridge

It has been recently discovered that the NBCC varies with your systems FSB and multiplier settings. The NBCC can be calculated by dividing your CPU current multiplier by its default multiplier and then multiplier the sum by your FSB.

For Example:

E6600 @ 500Mhz and a 7 multiplier:

(9 / 7) x 500 = 642Mhz NBCC

So it can be seen that lowering your multiplier, even though offering addition headway for FSB on the CPU, will increase the NBCC, reduce NB stability and thus cause the overall system stability to decrease.

XE (Extreme Edition) and ES (Engineering Sample) processors have the unique ability to adjust their multipliers up (All XE, not all ES) and down (all chips) while maintaining its multiplier status as default.

For Example:

X6800 @ 500Mhz and a 7 multiplier (just like above)

(7 / 7) x 500 = 500Mhz NBCC

As you can see, the X6800 has the exact same settings as the E6600, however, the NBCC is lower, resulting in increased system stability.

Moving along, the NBCC has a series of latencies at which it operates. These latencies has considerable effect on overall system performance. The latencies within the NB increase when your NBCC hits specific values, thus increasing stability, but decreasing performance. A range of latencies that operate in specific NBCC values are referred to as straps. There is a 1066Mhz strap, 1333Mhz strap, and so on. However, the name is misleading, because motherboard engineers change the frequency at which specific straps set in. The trigger NBCC's for each range of latencies is different for all motherboards. However, you can manually test many different NBCC values by using Super Pi or a memory bandwidth test to find where the latencies within your system change.

What does this mean for our overclocking?
The classical response to an instable overclock was:
 1. Increase CPU voltage.
 2. Increase Memory voltage.

However, one must now consider NB voltage (stability) when system instability arises. This is especially true with Core 2 systems which are capable of far higher FSB than what the NB can handle.

So with this in mind, an Intel overclocker must be aware of:
 • what strap they are in
 • what part of the strap they are in
If you are at the limit of a specific strap, you will most likely find your system to be less than stable. However, increase your NBCC to the next strap and your system suddenly becomes more stable.
This Northbridge Strap is a new term to me.

A more detailed explanation of what a Strap is would help. With your definition of what a Strap is, then being able to determine whether I'm in a certain Strap might be more achievable.

Thank you for your effort in creating this guide.

Not sure why the optimal always showed up as optical. Must be the spell checker?

I wrote this in word and I really liked the formatting. Unfortunately, the formatting went to hell when I copied it to the thread. I will work on that.

Things to do:
 1. Edit formating, make sections more clear.
 2. Elaborate on diminishing returns.
 3. Elaborate on dividers
I have fixed the grammatical errors. I will work on the above now.

Excellent work
I too would like to know more about the NB strap
and how to determine what strap I'm in.
Thanks

I know i could sure as h3ll use some better ram...600.00....for 4g's...sure thing. As long as its cas4 @ 1000mhz or better. I cant get my 6700 stable over 3.75ghz as 960mhz is as far as i can get my ram stable at....
