Default How to: Up the voltage on a Socket 478 CPU

so if your anything like me and buy the cheapest asus mobo you can find you may have encountered a common road block. the mighty "i bought a cheep mobo without voltage increase" block. i did too so don't feel stupid. i mean if you can get a $200 mobo with the voltage changing ability or a $70-$80 with all those features minus vcore control then you be i'll save the 100 bucks with the cheapy. what many people don't know is that you don't need an intelligent voltage regulator and a boat load of code to change a cpu. in fact intel was kind enough to do that for us. after a bit of personal discovery and later a bit of research i found that by shorting a couple of pins you can make your cpu voltage increase on any mobo including dell!!! you can also change the clock with pins as long as the mobo can support that clock and i'm hot on the case for that!!!! READ THE DISCLAIMER BEFORE YOU PROCEED. IT CAN BE FOUND AT THE BOTTOM

NOW LET'S GET STARTED

make sure that the "dip" (the 2 missing pins) is on the bottom left. the the first pins on the second row from the top left side are the voltage pins. see the pic below

How to: Up the voltage on a Socket 478 CPU-dscn0468b.jpg

different combonations of shorting these pins seems to change the voltage. by shorting the first 2 pins at firs i did this with tinfoil but it was very difficult to do without ripping the foil or contacting other pins. later i found a website that showed something similar done with copper wire. this i have found to be a great alternative as you can bend the remaining wire around the back like a sort of clip. to get thin enough wire you should use stranded wire bits such as from the one below

How to: Up the voltage on a Socket 478 CPU-dscn0470s.jpg

i recommend you snip off the end to get a bunch of strands. remember the smaller the better. the combination i recommend is to simply join the first two. this will give you a respectable .2 volt boost from 1.5-1.7. the ones seen in the pick below encased in a red box are the ones you should join

How to: Up the voltage on a Socket 478 CPU-dscn0468c.jpg

this is what it should look like when your done. make sure no other pins are contacted or you won't boot and may damage your computers hardware.

How to: Up the voltage on a Socket 478 CPU-dscn0471r.jpg

now with any luck you should be running at 1.7 volts! this will help you overclock to greater clocks and save you money on an expensive mobo

disclaimer: modifying your processor is dangerous. it can destroy hardware in the pc of almost any type if not done properly. i have not tested in more than one motherboard and so cannot guarantee success or functionality. i'm not responsible, nor is overclock.net, for any damages to your components for any reason.

Will this work with any P4 478pga or is it only for northwoods? I might give it a shot if it will work with my 3.2e. Great guide man!

Sounds like a big risk if your doing it to your only computer.
Just because it works once doesn't mean it'll work again.
How long has it been running successfully since modded, and again, how long will it last till it burns up (taking out the mobo with it)?

I'd like to hear more about this. Where'd you figure this out? How does it, exactly, deliver more voltage?

i don't see why it wouldn't. it might burn it out though especially if you have bad cooling

I wouldn't pump 1.7V into a Northwood.

Did you ever hear of the sudden death Northwood syndrom? It happens at around 1.7V
