Alright, well good news, and really bad news....
I went ahead and did the lapping. Though I would have liked to take it down to a mirror finish, I only had 2000 Grit, and I got the damn thing pretty shinny. Here is how it all went. Set up ready to start lapping ![]() Stock CPU, this is how it looked ![]() Marked up and ready to go, let the games begin.... ![]() Starting the 800 Grit.... Look how concave it was ![]() Halfway through the 800 Grit. ![]() 3/4 of the way done the 800 Grit. ![]() Done the 800 Grit..... ![]() ![]() End of 1000 Grit ![]() Mid 1500 Grit ![]() End 1500 Grit.. ![]() And the final product, after the 2000 Grit..... There are lots of fine scratches, but I didn't have the time, patence, or higher grit sandpaper to get that "Mirror finish.... ![]() Last but not least mounted in the socket ready to go! ![]() Now for the disater segment.... While screwing in My Zalman 9700 to the conversion bracket, I broke a screw off in the bracket, and was unable to get it out.... So until my new Tuniq Tower arrives, I am stuck with the stock intel HSF... IRONY IS A *****! oh well, I will have to wait and see how much of a temperature decrease i acheieved.... Thanks to all who helped! Especially MadMax... REP+

Good job on that lap job, Goes to show how concave these things are.
That finish is fine you dont need any more then that to get good temps, thats about what I do mine to and it works fine, its getting it flat that matters the most.

OK, so the lapping did help alot, even using the stock intel HSF, I am currently running 333x9 @ 2988 1.375v. with an idle of 46c, and max of 61c, I have a tuniq tower on the way along with another 1 GB of corsair ram. I think i'm quite pleased, and I will post pics when i get home. I still cannot manage to get orthos stable with any O/C, there has to be somthign i'm missing.

so you just stick the sandpaper to the flat glass and then run the CPU back and forth over it and increase the grit?
what u got on the back of the CPU protecting the pins btw?

Liek max suggested, I still had the original box from the CPU, and used the black cover that came with it. worked great

OK, so I thought I would post an update as i'm dubbing this as MY O/C thread.... After installing the TT and lapping my processor, my temps have dropped drasticly, not near what conroe's can acheive, but i'm happy....
My current O/C that is orthos stable is 3150MHz (350x9) @ 1.425v, with idle temps of 37c and load temps of 67c.... I know alot of people say not to go over 65c, but i mean honeslty who really has their comp running at 100% all the time, and I still have a few things left to do to lower the temps further..... I still have yet to lap my Tuniq, and I don't believe that I put enough AS5 on my CPU, so i'm hoping that will help, also I have yet to start backing down the voltage to see what is the minimum stable o/c @ what volts. Here are some pics so far: IDLE ![]() LOAD ![]() I will keep you all posted, and will most likely revert back to 333x9 for the summer, as it is hot as hell in my basement

I think I suggested this a while back, but I know when you get a ton of info things get overlooked.. 8x multiplier = lower vcore.. In every 4300 that I have helped out with or built myself (30+ or so) the 8x multi was used to get a higher fsb with a much lower vcore.. I run my vcore @1.28v w/ 8x400fsb.. The highest I have ever seen used is 1.400vcore with the 8x multi.. I see that in your first post you can run at the same Ghz speed with the 8x multi.. I would suggest using the 8x multi and the higher fsb.. It should perform a little faster and use way less vcore to run stable.. Try it out with a 1.375vcore, I'd bet you run rock solid.. Congrats. on your better temps, nice that all that effort worked out for you, let me know about my suggestions... oh and i like "your thread" lol

CoreTemp is displaying incorrect temperatures. The Tjmax for that chip isn't 100c, it's 85c. CoreTemp, everest, and speedfan are all incorrect on the L2 steppings of the e4300. Use Realtemp, that's the only program that reports believable temperatures.
You should not be at 68c on a Tuniq.
