Yes, you can disable them if you like, you really have the choice here. I've only stated that you should keep them disabled because I have read reports of instability after enabling them, but I can't see any actual proof to back that up. I just keep it there to cover myself until I can find definitive proof one way or the other I'll update in the morning when my room stops spinning...
