Hi overclockers. I have a problem ,just a few minutes ago i started oc'ing my cpu for the first time. As im writing this my cpu is overclocked , im currently running E6400 at 2,71Ghz FSB 340 and ram at 850Mhz timing <5-5-5-18> Cpu voltage at 1.33750V
Now my problem is when i run orthos , in a matter of seconds the temperature hits 62C and i know this is not a safe temp to run in. I have a stock intel cooler tht came with the processor , but i read somewhere tht E6400 can hit 3ghz with stock cooler . What am i doing wrong?

Your vcore is fine, thats not giving you the problem im sure. Put your memory voltage on 2.1, put the timings on 5-5-5-15 first off
__________________My processor temps have hit 62C in coretemp under about 3 hours load, not within seconds though. The stock cooler is deffinetly going to limit you there, id try reseating possibly, it probably wont help anything, i would DEFFFINETLY reccomend you getting a decent CPU cooler before trying to go on with overclocking, no reason to risk your nice processor in a situation like that. Look into the Thermaltake Blue orb, for cheap but a decent cooler, or if you wanna drop around 75 bucks, look into the Thermalright Ultima 90 or Thermalright 120extreme CPU coolers. Post back with what preferences you would like to have if you were gonna upgrade your cpu cooler, which youll deffinetly need to do if you want to overclock, gonna have to do it sometime ![]() Also it can hit 3.0 yes, but with what vcore? You could try hitting 3.0 on 1.375, most likely orthos will be unstable though within a few minutes. Deffinetly reseat the cooler and reapply thermal paste though if your looking to just try to keep it around 2.8 and try lowering the vcore to 1.3500 and settle without much overclocking right now

Yeh i guess ill have to buy a cooler then :/ I'll grab one of the zalmans maybe . So i guess i cant overclock my cpu yet. If i loosen the timing to 4-4-4-12 will it give a little boost?

Keep in mind, you can probably overclock your processor while undervolting as well. I'm going to do a more thorough test on my CPU this weekend, but I'm fairly certain it will be stable at 3.0GHz at something around 1.2v

Well 4-4-4-12 is actually tigher than 5-5-5-18, you probably wont tell a difference, but thats getting your ram on the right track by setting volt at 2.1 and tighting the timings up a lil bit. Then you can work on the FSB freq and cpu vcore voltages after you have significant cooling for overclocking
__________________20-30 dollars will get you a good anough cooler to overclock somewhat, but my has well go all out. The zalmans? yeah there some good coolers, the 9700 is really good IMO, the 9500 is just its little brother, either or you will be fine to overclock up to 3.3 or so mhz.

Oh dont say that to afzsom! He'll make it possible lmao

Well, I ran the E6600 @ 3.0GHz at 1.2750v set in the BIOS. After droop it was close to 1.2v, so I'll do some overnight testing and report back in the morning with screens and data (in my own thread, of course).

This is how I went from 60c to 40c with my OCed e6600.
I did the mistake of OCing and having my voltages for the vCore and FSB set to default. Then instead I set 1.2v for the FSB and 1.2000 for the vCore, and it's stable, I got a really good stepping too so that might be why I'm able to do a 0.6GHz OC on stock.
