Very nice! This gives me more ideas for when I lap my CPU and HS (I will eventually.. soon..)

forgive my ignorance... I've never heard of lapping before, but it sounds like you are shaving your CPU. I sort of cringed reading this thinking that anyone who tried it would damage their CPU for sure.
__________________Can someone maybe enlighten me on why the CPU is not being damaged, at what point the CPU will be damaged, how effective this is overall, and if there is a difference in the way it looks to the naked eye before and after lapping (a pic if you have one). This just has me curious more than anything. Thanks and sorry for the nubbish questions

The Die of the CPU sits under the IHS (Internal Heat Spreader). It is the IHS that is being lapped (smoothed out), the Die remains untouched. NOTE: Lapping voids all warranties, and may drop the potential re-sale value. Yes, a difference can be seen, but you will need some visual tools like graph paper or small print. A razor blade and back-lighting will also reveal inconsistencies in the surface.

Here's a generic shot of my E6400 CPU unlapped and as it ships from the factory: ... ![]() ... Here's my CPU after lapping and in it's motherboard socket. Notice how the top is now mirror-like and is the color of the exposed copper? ... ![]() ... The mirror finish is optional. The benefit to lapping your CPU is a flatter contact surface for the heatsink (which should also be lapped). I dropped 5 degrees after lapping. Totally worth it. The mention of a razor blade, above, is simply a way of measuring how flat your lap job is. The razor blade is not used to actually *lap* the CPU. All you need are various grits of sandpaper and a real flat surface to work on.

I have lapped my new E2180 but cannot get it even. The corners seem to wear down the most. Any suggestions?

This means your CPU is most likely 'concave' ... or shallower in the center. The solution = KEEP GOING!! ![]() You *will not* sand through your heat spreader. I know it seems like keeping going will be too much but it's not. The first one I did, I did the same exact thing ... stopped before the entire surface was flat, ... after doing a bunch of research online, I took it out and redid it. Took a couple hours. Go for it!
