I should do this to my CPU, It's been about 4-5 years I've had this computer so there is no warranty I have to worry about and this thing runs HOT.

Here's some noob questions!

I understand what the results should look like, but my questions are for pre lapping.

What is the best thing I should use to cover the pins? And after finishing the lapping should I use any thermal paste?

Edit: What should I use to get current thermal paste off?

Go for it if the computer is that old.

my pins are in my MB so im not sure what people use for that.

use standard rubbing alchohol to get the old paste off.

and yes, apply thermal paste after. there are many methods but i just put a small dab in the middle of the chip before seating the HS. you dont need that much because the hs will spread it out from the pressure.

hope this helps

Yeah whoops my pins are on the MB as well, But would it be bad to set the chip alone say on a wooden table, maybe put it on a cloth or something?

I'm going to use MX-2 and find a copper heatsink for my Socket 478.

Edit: Actually the pins are on the CPU itself.

Some CPU's ship from the factory with a small plastic cover, that is a good protection measure.

Generally less thermal paste is required, and in some cases none. TheInformationator had a thread with a video that showed a running system wherein the HSF (Big Typhoon, it I recall correctly) was simply sitting on the IHS without any paste.
Additionally less pressure may be needed - but you will need to experiment.

Goof-Off (or any xylene-based cleaner will work). Or you could use rubbing alcohol.

What would you recommend to cover them with?

The pin-side of the CPU?

Hmmm... I have lapped without anything covering the CPU. I wash my hands thoroughly prior to the operation to remove as much of the residual oils on my hands.

It boils down to "care". When lapping be mindful of where you are holding the chip, it should be along the edges. If you are tired, or find your mind straying then take a break.

If you are concerned about ESD (Electro-static discharge) then you could use an anti-static wrist strap.

Is this lapping kit ok for lapping a Big Typhoon?

http://tinyurl.com/2ehqd5

Also, should I use all 8 grits for lapping the Typhoon copper base?

I want to get a mirror finish like Sideburns did with his Typhoon:

http://www.overclock.net/amd-air-coo...t-wowowow.html

Do I put a bit of water on the sandpaper?

Thanks!
