One of my buddies at work knows that I overclock my hardware, and was curious if there was a possibility of overclocking a Core 2 Duo or Core Duo laptop. I would imagine that it can be overclocked, but due to my intuitive way of thinking I suspect that the results will not be as dramatic as a desktop and that the RAM will hold the OC back much more dramatically than on a desktop. Another problem, I imagine, would be the heat buildup. Laptops aren't the best at cooling themselves so adding the extra heat from an OCed processor wouldn't help things any and that heat causes instability, freezes, crashes, and limited OC-ability.
Am I correct in my assumptions or are these CPUs just as good at OCing as the socket 775 desktop CPUs?

refrain from OCing laptops..as you stated, heat is an issue unless you plan on running it in an icebox. i suppose you could get a "laptop cooler" from newegg, but i doubt it will have any profound impact

See what the BIOS will let you do, and pay very strict attention to temps. It might be worth doing. I'd play with it lightly & safely to see.

Whoooooa hang on there. People have proven time and time again that OCing laptops results in disaster, and here's why:
1. You have to rely on windows-based overclocking utilities, which are notoriously unstable when they're the ONLY method of overclocking (Dell BIOSes don't let you play with OC settings). 2. Major heat buildup, real quick. Those things really put out BTUs and overclocking them puts the pressure on every system component - since they're all 2 inches from each other with one or two fans for cooling, this becomes a problem. 3. Voltages - laptops are meant for specific power settings. Unlike desktops, you can't simply get a bigger power supply for your beefier overclocks. You're stuck with what you've got, and it's not much for laptops. Do your friend a favor... don't let him overclock it. It'll be bad news for everyone.
