The guys at extreme have already gotten their hands on retail E series (the 8200, 8400, and 8500) and benched them. The consensus is that the E8500 overclocks really well, the two lower chips not so much. It may be a binning decision on intels part.

I guess that's why has $80 extra from E8400 to E8500. I am more toward to E8500 at this point.

It actually seems worth the extra for once.

I myself would love to see more benchmark data in multi core applications like 3ds max between the Q6600 and the new E8500. Also perhaps benches with both overclocked on stock voltage. I'm sorta wanting to upgrade soon but there's a good chance I'll be wanting to mess with 3DS Max and Maya.

Take into consideration from a benching perspective, the E6850's dominate the OCN top 30 graphics systems because they clock high enough that the extra cores of a Q6600 don't scale as well . Dual core chips always overclock far better than quads (with the exception of the extreme series chips like the QX9650 and that is because it benefits from an unlocked multiplier which takes some of the need away for uber FSB).

Robilar's Missing Link:
Retail E8200 & E8400 Benchies
Scroll down for some E8500 "screenies" too!
And E8500 Retail Bench Thread
Both over at Extreme. (C'mon OCN)
Shows first Stepping (C0) OCs not anywhere near as nice as Engineering Samples

Some Thoughts/links from their thread(s):
Quote:
I would wait for D0 stepping to come out, it will because the C0 contains errata in the Intel spec specification PDF with a "Plan Fix" next to it
I found the PDF For the Exxxx Series E8000Series PDF
And most interestingly: The Intel Sheet listing proposed stepping release dates:
Quote:
If a new revision is created, it will be posted per the following 2008 schedule: January 16, February 13, March 12, April 16, May 14, June 11, July 16, August 13, September 10, October 15, November 12, December 10.
Quote:
Could it be the e8500 is the one that they bin the highest and there is a huge gap between the lower cpu's? maybe there is a reason the chips cost $80 more than the e8400 and it wasn't just for that .5 multi it's highest binned so = highest overclock? Maybe I'm just blowing smoke but it sorta makes sense. Intel could be getting very strict with their binning of chips.
LinsK, not sure if you want to add some of these links to your "HotLinks" /Latest Info section on OP
Keep up the good work!
Cheers

3dsMax and Maya while rendering will utilize all available cores. I would wait until a penryn quad tho.
