Features and capabilities

45nm Penryn is the shrink and derivative stage processor under the current Intel Intel Core microarchitecture. Penryn has many enhancements over 65nm processors. Here are some highlights.
  • Microarchitecture Optimizations. Penryn increases the overall performance of current Intel Core microarchitecture to deliver more instruction executions per clock cycle, which results in more performance and quicker PC responsiveness.
  • High transistor density. Penyryn has nearly twice the transistor density compares to 65nm processors, which is up to 410 million transistors for dual-core processors and 820 million transistors for quad-core processors based on Intel's new formula. 2x improvement in transistor density, for either smaller chip size or increased transistor count 30% reduction in transistor switching power >20%improvement in transistor switching speed or >5x reduction in source-drain leakage power >10x reduction in gate oxide leakage power.
  • Larger Caches . Penryn processors include up to a 50 percent larger L2 cache with a 24-way associativity to further improve the hit rate and maximize utilization. Dual-core Penryn processors will feature up to a 6MB L2 cache and quad-core processors up to a 12MB L2 cache. Cache is a memory reservoir where frequently accessed data can be stored for more rapid access. Larger and faster cache sizes speed a computer's performance and response time
  • 100 percent lead-free technology. Intel use Lead-free materials to wrap around the chip and pins ultimately connect it to the motherboard.
  • Improving Energy-efficient. Intel uses Hi-k silicon technology for reduced transistor leakage. Deep Power Down, a new advanced power management state to reduces the power of the processor during idle periods such that internal transistor power leakage is no longer a factor. Enhanced Intel® Dynamic Acceleration Technology uses the power headroom freed up when a core is made inactive to boost the performance of another still active core.
  • Advanced Digital Media Boost. Speeding Up video encoding and processing, Photo Imaging, and High Performance Software. Penryn includes Intel Streaming SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) Extensions 4 (SSE4) instructions, the largest unique instruction set addition since the original SSE Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). This extends the Intel 64 instruction set architecture to expand the performance and capabilities of the Intel architecture. SSE4 introduces 47 new instructions to improve performance of video accelerators, graphics building blocks and streaming load. Intel claims a 2x performance gain in video acceleration tasks. There are 14 new instructions for video accelerator performance enhancement. Intel improves compiler auto-vectorization performance with 32 new instructions.
  • Enhanced Virtualization Technology . Penryn speeds up virtual machine transition (entry/exit) times by an average of 25 to 75 percent. This is all done through microarchitecture improvements and requires no virtual machine software changes.
  • Higher Frequencies . Penryn family of products will deliver higher overall clock frequencies within existing power and thermal envelopes to further increase performance.
  • Fast Division of Numbers Penryn-based processors provide fast divider performance, roughly doubling the divider speed over previous 65nm processors used in nearly all applications through the inclusion of a new, faster divide technique called Radix 16.
  • Super Shuffle Engine By implementing a full-width, single-pass shuffle unit that is 128-bits wide, Penryn processors can perform full-width shuffles in a single cycle. This significantly improves performance for SSE2, SSE3 and SSE4 instructions that have shuffle-like operations such as pack, unpack and wider packed shifts. This feature will increase performance for content creation, imaging, video and high-performance computing.
  • Excellent overclocking. Early stage Penryn sample shows that they are easy to overclock to 4G at air with relatively low vcore voltage and idel/load temperature. High stability at this stage shows that 45nm manufacturing process is healthy and ready for prime time.
  • Coefficient ½ X multiplier increment. For the first time, Intel introduces processor multiplier with the 0.5 step in Penryn . As the FSB increase from 333 to 400MHz, multiplier with 0.5 step will be useful to attend the max and break between frequencies.

Specs and Price

This is the most recent list of Penryn family of processors. The chart looks scrabble a bit. I will streamline it as time permits and update the list as data available. Penryn product line crosses desktop, laptop and Server/workstation. Penryn is the family code name. Inside Penryn family, each type of processors has its own code name. The socket type of desktop is LGA775, server/workstation is LGA771 and mobile is Socket P.

Motherboard and Memory

Intel's X48, X38, P35, and G33 chipsets officially support Penryn processors. The new coming P45 and G35 also support Penryn processors. Some vendors are current testing and trying to confirm P965 and P975X chipset to see if they support Penryn processors with updated BIOS. On the other hand, both new nForce 790i and 780i fully support Penryn processrots but 680i and 650i only supports dual core Penryn. We should know more as Jan, 2008 approaches. As the new chipset boards continue to roll out, the DDR3 ram will become standard eventually. However, as of today, the price of DDR3 is ridiculously high and doesn’t offer any significant performance boost over DDR2 so DDR2 won’t be gone soon.

Penryn Motherboard list

This is a list of current motherboards that support Penryn. Some well-known motherboards may support but I won’t add them in until vendors formally announce. I will add more motherboards and populate contents as time is permitted. Please verify the latest motherboard information in vendor website before you order Penryn processor or motherboards

Benchmarks

I update Penryn processors benchmark once we know more. I like the benchmark from bit-tech because it covers all areas such as 3D gaming, PC mark and 3D rendering as well as power consumption. Most importantly, it includes latest c2cd and AMD X2 processors.

The q9300 looks like it was made for me . But how much of a difference of 6mb L2 cache make? I might get the q9450 if it will make a huge difference!

Sorry, but in the time it took you to post this thread, Penryn is now obsolete. We will be moving our discussions to the 32nm chips.

Thanks for posting and have a great day!

Speaking of 32nm... my friend works for supply within Intel and he told me that they actually have 32nm working. Maybe this is old, but he was quite excited about it.

That's why I wrote in the first line. This may not be a good idea to take on this subject. Alright, see if I can get it done next 2 weeks.

Yes, I have read that in a few magazines. Personally, I'm waiting until the nanometers get into the negative numbers before I upgrade. That should be no more than a year or so.
