Not necessarily. Some ES chips back at Core 2 launch didn't do as well as retail, although they did have an unlocked multiplier.

Since the Core architecture is very mature at this point, it's safe to assume that these ES's are cherry picked to convince the overclocking crowd.

So the Xbit labs review was Intel playing us because they hit 4.33Ghz with 1.5v

Remember though, 1.5v through a 45nm CPU is NOT the same as 1.5v through a 65nm CPU. 1.5v through 45nm is like 1.6v - 1.7v through a 65nm, which is definitely not made for 24/7 use, unless under Dry Ice/LN2.

Yep, i agree there.

My problems were down to the Nvidia chipset. no thank you, stick to GPU's please.

Never will i touch a mobo with a Nvidia chipset again.

No need. Search for Asus Striker on this forum and read for yourself. That or go to asus.com and read how 90 percent of the threads in the Striker forum are either *****ing or asking what other brand to go to.

Asus mods delete lots of posts each day that say bad things about the Striker. I've quoted them, as have others.

What CD pointed out about Wolfdale not overclocking well, if you actually read the article, only mentioned the E8200 and E8400, NOT the E8500. X-bit lab's review was done on an ES sample, granted, but it still did show a significant difference between E8200 overclocking and E8500. It's also reasonable, for what appears to be only a 0.5x multiplier difference, the E8500 is $100 more expensive than E8400, probably Intel's way of charging you for a CPU that overclocks better.

What I fear about Yorkfield is the very same situation: The Q9450 and Q9550 is also $100 different in price with only a 0.5x multiplier difference. If what Intel did with Worfdale is any indication, the Q9450, which contains the number 4, would also be lackluster in overclocking while the Q9550 overclocks similar to E8500.
There's no way I'm paying $500 for a non-extreme CPU, that's why I preordered the E8500.

Besides, if all goes bad, you can always sell it, Penryns are unlikely to drop in price, but 65nm Quads are definitely going to.

I had a love/hate relationship with my Striker Extreme. It was a pain to OC but when the settings were right, it was a great board...until it doesnt want to...I thought I would never go Asus+nVidia Chipset...but the P5N-T and Nuclearjock getting INITIAL good OCs is making me look again.

I am still on the fence about the QX9650. I DO want a Quad that can get me to 4.0ghz...that would be some serious Folding power.

This is exactly the problem. Look at the E8500, it has a 9.5x multiplier and even the E8400 has 9x multiplier. I seriously doubt a Q9450 can clock nearly as high with a 8x multiplier.

All in all, if you want a $500 quad, get a Q6700 for the ease of overclocking.

So if I were to get a quad core now a Q6600 would be the best bang for teh bucks. How about 6 months from now?
