I'd like some advice on getting the best out of my system - but not necessarily extreme; around 2.8 ghz would be fine, but I'd like the memory to work better.

Asus P5N-e mobo (Bios 1301)
Q6600 (Akasa AK-965 cooler)
4gb (2x2GB DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), OCZ (Fatal1ty)
8800GTS graphics

OS is Vista 32

I tried Ntune and the system kept freezing, even on the base profile so had to get rid of that POS, reset to default bios settings, system restore and reinstall drivers..ho hum.

Tried the following settings and the pc wouldn't post:

vcore 1.3500
mem voltage 2.013
5-5-5-18-2t
NB v 1.208
NB mhz 100
FSB 1333
DDR2 mhz 800

I'm a total newbie to OC'ing, and have read this thread but don't know if I shoud revert to an older bios and use diddler's settings or not.

The case is pretty well (air) cooled, and I've put a Zalman heatsink on the SB, just in case...

Currently running on default settings - which puts the memory at 6-6-6-18-24-1t at 1.8v

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Put the RAM on default speed and timings (whatever yours happen to be), put your memory voltage at 2.1-2.2v, put your NB voltage at 1.393v, and leave your vcore at 1.35.

hi mcogan -was your post directed to me or the previous poster?

Out of interest, I tried the above settings - leaving everything else at default -and it made no difference at all (compare this validator report to previous -the same) , am wondering if I need to change FSB?

Edit -changed FSB to 1333 (unlinked) and the PC will not load windows, kept restarting.

Cheers

hughie

Try giving more volts to the north bridge. I believe the next step up is 1.56.

I have done - no effect. When I increase the fsb to 1333, it's the same story with windows not loading.

I don't want to over-stretch the NB as it only has the stock heatsink on it. Can I take it further than 1.56?

I wouldn't for more than a very short period of time. I took mine to the 1.7x when benching my memory at 1066 but it was for < 10 minutes and even that scared me a bit. Although I still had the stock heatsink then. But even with my Spirit II I still get temps up in the 40's at 1.56v.

Np, If you need to know how I sggst you check out diddler's guides on how to flash back and how to overclock, it gives you very good in-detail directions on how to go about doing this.
