Default Intel BSEL & VID mod Guide

This mod covers the following CPU's:
Pentium Dual Core E2140, E2160, E2180, E2200, E2220, E5200 (not VID)
Celeron 420, 430, 440, E1200, E1400
Core 2 Duo E4300, E4400, E4500, E4600, E4700
Also applies to many CPU's NOT in this list, it really needs updating

BSEL Mod

So what exactly is a BSEL Mod?

The mod will increase your processors 'default speed', it is done by connecting the pins on the bottom of the processor. This 'tricks' the motherboard into thinking the processor has a higher FSB and therefore boots at a higher speed.

Example time
I'm going to use an E2160 CPU as an example, it has a 800mhz FSB and a 9x multiplyer. So I'm going to BSEL mod it so it has a 1066mhz FSB, so I would simply connected the corresponding pins for 1066mhz (see the diagrams below for what pins to connect). This will now give the CPU a new 'default' speed, instead of 200x9=1.8Ghz it is now running 266x9=2.4Ghz.

Why would I need to do this mod?

Most people won't need to do this mod, its for people with motherboards with limited or no overclocking options or pre-builts PC's like Dells. Another advantage of the mod is that it overclocks your processor to a new 'default' speed, so all your other components (eg. PCI-E frequency & memory) will be at stock speeds.

How do I do the Mod?

You're Going to Need:

Conductive Ink Pen or Copper tape
Electrical tape

I personally use a circuit writer pen ($10/£9 from amazon)

All you have to do is connect or cover the pins on the corresponding diagram. On the diagrams red=connect and green=cover (to cover, use electrical tape) If you don't quite get it, scroll down to the pictures at the bottom which should show it more clearly. If using conductive ink, slap it on then have a pie, grab a drink and feed the cat. By the time you have done those things it should be dry and ready to use.

Reversing the Mod

BSEL & VID mods can easily be reversed, if copper tape is used just remove it. If conductive ink is used, use a high alcohol solution to remove it (same stuff for removing TIM of CPU's etc). Once the mod is removed your CPU will run at its factory default speeds.

Read the Following Before Doing the Mod:
  • 1333 BSEL mods will not work on chipsets that do not natively support 1333 FSB's, eg. intels 945 chipset.
  • The mods won't work on gigabyte motherboards as they use the CPU ID to determine the FSB, not the pins on the CPU.
  • This is still an overclock, so temperatures will increase and you will still need to stress test using orthos, prime95 etc.
  • These mods may not work on SiS or Via chipsets.
  • Some processors need more voltage at higher frequencies to be stable, so a VID mod may be required to make your overclock stable.
  • These mods apply to 800Mhz FSB CPU's, so thats pentium E2xxx, Celeron E1xxx & 4xx and core 2 duo E4xxx. Mods are available for CPU's with a higher FSB so just ask.
  • Speedstep still works when mods are done

Here are the diagrams for the 1066 & 1333 BSEL Mod:

VID Mod

So whats a VID Mod?

A VID mod is similar to a BSEL mod, but instead of changing the FSB it raises the vcore. And its done the same way as a BSEL mod.

VID Mods for CPU's with a default voltage of 1.325v

800-->1066 BSEL Mod on my E2160

And 1.4v VID mod on E2160.

And the final result, from an E2160 & MSI P6NGM-FD motherboard I managed 3.2Ghz. Done using a 1333 BSEL Mod, 1.4v VID mod & a little extra bios overclocking

Thanks to:

Dasparx for helping me with some modding
VR-Zone for some pics[/CENTER]

And here's the mod for 1066 defaulters as requested by some:

Just looked at the specs of that board:
Quote:
Front Side Bus 1066MHz
800MHz
533MHz
It only support FSB's up to 1066 and doesn't support 1333 so thats why its only booting with @ 1066.

Both do the same thing, as they both connect BSEL2 to VSS (ground) they just do it differently. But niether will work on your motherboard, you best option would be to use the 1066 bsel then manually raise the FSB in your bios and you may be able to get to 1333 that way.

But the manual say it FSB1333 cpu will operate in overclocking mode, doesn't that mean 1333 is supported???

Specifications
CPU LGA755 Socket for Intel® Core™ 2 Duo/ Pentium® Dual-Core/ Pentium® D/ Pentium® 4/ Celeron® D Processors with 1333*/1066/800/533 MHz FSB
*(FSB1333 CCPU will operate in over-clocking mode. Under this situation, PCIE frequency will also be over-clocked to 115MHz.)
Supports Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology

I had an Asrock board that used the 945 chipset, which also said it supports 1333 in overclocking mode and it did the exact same thing. The 1333 BSEL mod will only work on motherboards that support 1333 FSB's natively, and the 945 chipset only supports upto 1066 natively. Although, I managed 3Ghz on my old Asrock board by doing the 1066 BSEL then overclocking in the bios and abit boards are much better than Asrock so you should be able to do the same.
