Motherboard choice plays a much larger role in max OC than VID. And even if you got 2 exact motherboards, both may have different max OC capabilities on the same processor.

What does this tell us? That we are all at the mercy of the OC gods.

Also screwed my intel makes it sounds like they promised you a good overclocking chip... we all play the ocing game and take the chances of buying chips and hoping for the best.

Intel sells a product that does its rated and advertised specs its just that we try to push it to the limits. Intel didnt screw you is what people are saying... It sucks that you didnt get a super low VID and an amazing chip I mean of course we all hope for that....

Either way its a decent overclock...

Yeah, my Q6600 is limited by my IP35 Pro's super 0.07v vdroop. Plus the DS3L I'm using for my E2180 needs to have 1.485v in the BIOS for 1.455v in CPU-Z, which under load lowers to 1.425v.

I already know getting good chips is luck (or you buy it used), and I just got unlucky both times.

I also have a 1.325 VIS on my E2180 .
Its a good overclocker - will do 3.5ghz with just under 1.5v - only trouble is I would need watercooling to keep it at acceptable temps. As it is I run at 3.2ghz (1.44v) I've lapped it and still get 72*C load temps.

Your E2180 is clocking about the same as mine right now. I'm priming 3.1Ghz with 1.425v. I'll try 3.2Ghz when I can get 3.1Ghz stable.

Yeah...I am totally happy with 3.2ghz from a 2.0ghz chip...But the frustrating thing is I know it can do 3.5ghz perfectly stable, it just gets hot. The difference is very noticable (both in app opening and windows boot times)

3.1Ghz needing 1.425v is high for any 65nm, if you are not running 1:1 then do so, set any performance options like turbo etc, to standard and give the NB about +.05 ~ +.1v and see if the CPU will take a lower volt stable, I have to say 1.425v is rediculas for 3.1Ghz.

I'll try running it at 1:1. All the turbo BS is disabled, and my NB is at it's highest setting, +0.3v.

But 1.425 is pretty numbing for 3.1Ghz.

No....Go check out linskingdom's thread listing stable overclocks on the e2xxx series. Most of them are around that level. Particularly the newer chips require a bit more voltage than some of the older ones.
