Default My CPU got cooked at 25 degrees centigrade

As someone who does a Lotta OC and mods myself and for friends and fellow enthusiasts, this is a Situation I come across a Lot. Someone will have a Liquid Nitrogen cooled or Coolant oil based setup and think “I Can OC to the ends of the Earth Right...?” Wrong!!! People (Read Noobs mostly) need to understand this . As an electronics Engineer I've fried a lotta stuff... Here is a small Guide....to not doing it

Q: I have a Core 2 Arch Processor. What kinda performance increase I can get by raising Voltages with the FSB?
A: You should always try and go as high as Possible with your stock voltage (Vid). when stability takes a hit, you should start raising volts in increments of .05 volts. On a 65nm die and core 2 arch, based on your particular stepping and (Vid) you should be able to get somewhere close to 150 – 225 Mhz of processor frequency.

P.S. : Always do some stability testing with P95 or something that suits you after gradual, small steps.
Always keep a keen eye on your temperatures.

Q: I have good cooling. I don't need to worry about voltages if my temps are cool right...?
A: Wrong. Temperature is only a relative Measure of the kind of stress your CPU is taking. It is very possible to fry your processor at normal temps.

Q: I dont get it... Frying at low temps? Are ya yanking me..? how can High voltage fry anything if its not heating it up...?
A: No. Im not... and for the record I dont like the redneck accent.... Processors are Made of semiconductors and not conductors, so the “heat dissipation is happening and too much of heat will Melt the wire” kind of philosophy doesn't really work for semiconductors. Transistors are operated with a Bias Voltage. This is the voltage that Powers up a transistor so that it is able to switch between a “high” value and a “low” value. This is what gives rise to binary language and the entire platform for Computing. The higher the Voltage, the lower the Time lag between a high to low switch the faster the transistor.

Q: Still Doesn't explain how I can fry it...?
A: Wait.... Lemme finish... the transistor is effectively a layer of doped semiconductor between other Layers of Doped Semiconductor and electrons are flowing from one layer to the other under the influence of the Vcore or Vbias and also in reverse owing to the polarity of these p or n junctions. When you give too Much Vbias , you risk destroying your p-n junction by over-volting.

Q: I get it... So how much I should I generally overvolt? is there a way to check how much my processor can take...?
A: Yes but sadly that requires you to know the fabrication process inside out and since neither intel, nor AMD nor IBM (PowerPC) will be too keen on us finding out, we must rely on conventional wisdom. 30 % of your VID is the max you should step up on intel chips.

Hope you found this informative.... Do refer ppl to this link if they are looking for more information about voltages and temps.

Q: Wait a sec... You Never Told Me whats generating that heat....?
A: Well Mostly its the ohmic contacts that are put to cascade transistors. Here is a Little exercise... Go buy a 7805 3 pin regulator from your local guy... connect the middle pin to ground and the BIAS pin to a 5 volt power supply. take temp of the heat sink.... connect it to a 12 supply... take reading again....connect it to a 48 V supply and then take the reading.... If someone doesn't do this in 4 days ... I'll tell you what you should see...

Signing out...

You are on 1.46 on a q6600 GO .... the vid for mine is 1.1625V i dont think you are in that danger zone.... are you stable...? whats the Vdroop...?

sorry... i kinda forgot that i wrote this... he he... Well what happens is that with the 48V supply the temperature will not reach the high point as it will with the 12 V.... why...? because your transistor has been dead from the instant you switched on the supply.... It didn't overheat... It avalanched... you could look up the term diode avalanche on wikipedia for greater detail..... Now imagine one of these key transistors breaking down inside your CPU with a few million running at full throttle... Your cooler kept the temps in the safe zone but coolng can't shield your chip from the avalanche effects of over-volting...
