Well, I have been playing around with a friends mobo for around a week now (XFX 680i LT SLI), discovering what fsb holes it has for a Q6600 etc, I could never get it past 3.6Ghz without more than 1.48vCore, I had it running at 4.3Ghz at 1.75vCore (Was careful with temps) which is fairly massive so i dropped it back down. I have been at it for a week now as i said, but even after around 48 hours of uptime i would still freeze @ 3.6Ghz / 1.48 - 1.51vCore.
__________________I dropped the vCore to 1.39 and attempted to boot into windows @ 3.6, it seems to work... so i begin stability testing etc, just finished a 48hour orthos test and it's 100% stable, no errors or anything. (temp is constantly below 20degrees @ 100% load too). Now is this a bug or have i hit some sort of jackpot? Spent a week trying to stabalize at 3.6 with 1.48-1.51 vcore, no success, but its stable at 1.39? :S

Congratulations on finding out the secret to overclocking; it's not a simple matter of "if it ain't working, give it more juice," it's about finely tuning your components so that they all play nicely together. By lowering your voltage a little, you're reducing the stress on your motherboard, which in turn makes everything ELSE less stressed.

Yep, too much vcore can cause instability, thats prolly why it wasn't working till u gave it 1.39

I went through all the voltages and got fed up in the end and made a big jump from 1.35 to 1.47, so sorta missed everything in between. In the past 1.4375 has given me the best results, got a E6400 to 4.0 using it a while back.

Congrats! And another thing, YOU PUT 1.75v THROUGH THAT CHIP!? My god, I would think that would destroy it even if temps are good.

Thank you sir, enjoy
elementskater, you'd think that a high voltage like that would cause the chip to explode, but take a look at the world records for the q6600. They've been through a lot worse. One guy had his at 1.98v O_o
