core 2 duo is crushing phenom, in my opinion and according to pretty much all the benchmarks online. of course, AMD's architecture does favor certain operations from what i hear, but 90% of the time the intel will perform faster per clock.

if you're overclocking then intel is even that much better.
correct me if i am wrong but,
i have heard that the benches are coded in a way (intentianly or unintentianly) that favors intel processors so that is why they blow amds out of the water.
kind of like ati and nvida where the benches just test raw speed and not how the image it is displaying looks.

though intel does overclock better.

I have a Q6600 and i like it but as far is i know a Phenom X4 B3 is same clock per clock in almost 90% of thing with 65nm quads. Out of the box a 9950 is better then Q6600. Also with new Q6600 Oc very poorly 9950 mint not be just a bad by since then OC 3.3-3.5 with new MB.

you're wrong. i've had an X2 and a core 2 duo, the core 2 duo is much faster.

core 2 duo is truly the best cpu for the average user. AMD has its strong points, but nothing the majority of computer users need it to out-perform the core 2 duo in.

i mean, lets get some benchmarks together. ill throw in my 17.375 superpi score. anyone have a phenom clocked around 3ghz? note that my cpu only has 4mb L2 dedicated to any single core at any given time (8mb total) whereas the new core 2 products have two 6mb caches (12mb total).

Wait, I thought it was 2mb per core for the q6600.

Your question is not as straightforward as which CPU... you will have to consider your mobo too... (except if your currrent mobo can take a phenom... I don't know AMD and I'm too lazy to find out because if it can, your choice (taking into account budget) should be easy and the phenom will be best)

... else... some more thought than simply which cpu is needed should go into your decision... good idea to OC your CPU but not all cheap mobo's will OC successfully (ask me)... and then the price for your cpu/mobo might be too much...

its two cores sharing 4mb of cache each. if one core is active and the other core is inactive then the core that is active benefits from the entire 4mb. i know they're geniuses right?

if they didn't just slap two core 2 duo's together then i'm sure it would be slightly faster, but i guess its just easier for their manufacturing process because they do the same thing with their 45nm processors.

core________/_____core
4mb cache__/______4mb cache
core_______/_______core

make sense? two cores share one cache, it's like two seperate core 2 duo's.
