Yes to both. Most benchmarks favor Intel. This makes logical sense; who holds the market share? For an analogy: Which gets more attention, Windows or Mac? Which has the majority market share?

Further, Intel will, in general, clock higher. This has been the case since the K6 Pentium 1.

In the era before the Pentium, we are talking 80486, 80386, and older, AMD clocked higher than Intel and did the same per clock. Through the Pentium line (1, 2, 3, 4, 4 HT, 4 D) Intel clocked higher, but AMD (K6, K7, K8, K8D) did more per clock. With the advent of the Core from Intel, Intel does more per clock and goes faster.

This is why the world is waiting in anticipation of the newest K10 (Deneb) and the Core i7 (ne Nehalem).

And I concur with The Rocker. His E8600 has got my 5400+ BE beaten. For the same voltage, he has an extra 1,019 MHz on my best stable overclock. The difference of course is that his CPU cost $270 new, mine was only $77. His motherboard cost $240 new to my $120. Our RAM are comparable, and in fact, likely are the same RAM but in a different package. $510 versus $197. Is 2.6 times higher cost worth the 31% faster processor? Probably not. Yes, I know that it performs better than 31% better, but I refuse to believe that it is 2.6 times better.

*NOTE: I am not ragging on you or your rig The Rocker. I am just using your rig as a possible justification as to why I do not have an Intel. I have other reasons too not germane here. While I consider myself an "AMD Fanboy," I do strive for objectivity in all things; not everyone sees things the way I do and I respect their choices.

Quick news update:

I forgot about Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC) that is really starting to become mainstream. If you get a Phenom, mount it in a SB750 motherboard for maximum performance.

Well blitz.. I was just saying that. but overall I'm completely currently a FAN of Intel. They are amazing. Look at my Sig. that proves it. I have there best chip ATM.. well IMHO. the QX are decent chips. but unless your on Water I have the the best Intel at the moment. and I'm lovin every bit of it.

Some people say Dual to Quad isn't that big of a difference and that a Quad isn't needed and all that Jazz. but I had a AMD x2 5400+ at 2.8 Ghz Oc'd to 3.0 Ghz when I first started this current build. and I threw in a Q6700 at 2.66 Ghz and it was slower than my AMD by clock speed. my family was like WTH, why did you upgrade to a slower chip. They just didn't understand. but then when they used my computer. they were like I want one. can we throw away my HP with AMD i got from bestbuy please. lol . I've now built one for my family and my brother.

Intels are in all ways better at this moment than AMD. and they clock like beasts. I then went from the Q6700 to this current Q9650 and I'm up at 4.0 Ghz on all 4 cores within the second day of owning it.. and it's completely stable. thats saying something for intel. and I've pushed it to 4.2 and I'm still going higher. I just got it so still learning this baby. Check my Sig for the proof of the overclock. and thats on Air. no amd can do that..

yes oregonduck, your sort of right. and Go oregon state for beating USC. lol.
is that you in the avatar, or your girlfriend. looks like someone I know from utah!

xguntherc: No one said that a Quad AMD is better than a Quad Intel. The question of the original poster was "Which has better overall performance? OCed Core 2 Duo or OCed Phenom?" The problem is that while yes, Quad-Intels are impressive, they are not germane to this discussion.

And yes, the fastest air-cooled AMD I have seen was still sub-4.0, I am willing to cede that.
