Wait for DDR3 to get cheaper, and P55 to come out. THEN you get Corei7 for cheap.

The CPU isn't the expensive bit $200-300 is expected. THe $300 mobo and $200+ RAM is what kills you.

Core i7 will bring back hyperthreading. So your entry-level $367 i7 CPU is going to look like 8 CPUs to the OS but perform like a bit more than 4, unless the OS has been optimized for hyperthreading and you're running multi-core-aware apps.

And forget Windows XP. Most likely it'll just get confused by all those CPUs or your license just won't permit using them.

You'll need a hotfix and a prayer for Server 2003.

And Gawd only knows what your games will make of hyperthreading.

If you want to build a new rig, I would wait, but for an upgrade, get a faster CPU that works with your motherboard. Not an i7.
