i reckon i'll be upgrading my processor relatively soon, i was thinking about grabbing an e8400 or something like that, but i realize that the release of core i7 is only a few months away which isn't long at all. Would it be worth the wait to pinch my pennies and grab the low end core i7 920 with an x58 mobo? should run me about 600 bucks i think but might be worth it.

You'd need a new motherboard and new DDR3 ram. Not worth it yet imo.

If you grab the low end one....no. Just get a quad now.

what about for a "thearetical" person wanted to do an upgrade next summer (assuming prices dropped) and would be getting new board anyway; worth it?

If your getting everything new, go for it. Next summer prices on the core i7 and the DDR3 will have, most likely, dropped significantly.

If you are a heavy gamer, get a Q9650 and you will be happy. If you are into benchmarking wait for the Core i7.

Depending on how much money you spend, I am saving up because I upgrade every 2-3 cpu releases. So I missed the quads and the 45nm.

I think the best thing to do for those of us wanting to do full/entire system upgrades is to wait until i7 is released and see how the final product performs instead of making impressions now on early builds and relying on possibly fake reports/benchmarks (which has happened already).
Also, it depends heavily on price if it's "worth" it. Reports are that the Core i7 2.66GHz Bloomfield retail will be a little over $300, yet one report has stated it will be more closer to $400. That's a big difference in my opinion. And who knows how much the compatible motherboards will cost during the first month as well as Tri Channel DDR3 Memory kits, assuming you want to take advantage of that. Personally, due to the premium that's involved in being an early adopter, I would say that for the mainstream it would not be worth going i7 based on how much you will need to spend just to get an i7 system built. But no doubt there will be the group of people who WILL get it just because it's new rather than because of its performance over the previous generation. I am waiting until full overclocking analysis is done on the final build of the 2.66GHz before I make my decision to go i7 or go Core2. |
