There really aren't too many differences. For instance, the Xeon X3220 is virtually identical internally to the Q6600. In fact they're cut from the same wafer and just binned differently depending on how they test out.

The big difference you'll notice right off is the Xeon can run much hotter than the Core2 Quad, with a thermal spec of 85°C instead of 71°C. The Xeon also has a lower VID. It's designed, after all, to run 24x7 under load; but the Core2 Quad that runs 24x7 under load is rather uncommon.

In theory the X3220 should OC even better than the Q6600, though I don't know anybody who has one.

you see they have a certain demand for xeons and a certain demand for core 2 quad's. if they get an order for a xeon, they pick out one of the more stable one's of the batch. of course, different batches have different stability's so they just keep their retailers stocked.

generally, the xeon's cost more lol.

I/OAT might help a (small) bit with gaming. Somebody with a Xeon should report on this.

I wish Intel and AMD would do something special with their server cpu's, like back in the Pentium3 era when you could get a Xeon with 2mb L2 cache. They should bring back some of the prestige with owning a Xeon or Opteron.
