Yes OC is a matter of skill at some degree but not much.

OC and AMD CPU and tell me its cake
![]() Seriously, though, it isn't hard to adjust numbers, whats hard is to know how these changes affect each other and what can be done to acheive the highest stable OC. Taking a Q6600 from 2.43-3.6 is much easier than going from 3.6 to 3.8. Granted the HW itself has a lot to do with it, but I do think there is a certain amount of skill involved, its just that it usually doesn't matter until the last few mhz's.

Basic overclocking doesn't require skill... just a little knowledge and lots of patience. However, advanced overclocking does require skill in understanding hardware subtleties, quirks, circuit design, HVAC, ect.

I agree with all of the above. Especially with:

I would be a skill (we will see once the Nehalem comes out and everyone starts from ground zero again) if it wasn't for the fact that there are great forums like this who are willing to help you along the way.

It is more of just research and knowledge, I agree there has to be some kind of skill, I know people that want to overclock, and want to run good high end PC's, but for some reason or another, they just cant grab the nack of just simple use. Its only a matter of time before im wiping it out and reinstalling everything..... All because of user errors, or my favorite ID 10 T Errors LOL....
But realisticly, there has to be a certain passion for the extent that most of us Overclock.net member go to in order to achieve maximum performance from our current systems, and also to keep on the cutting edge of technology information to know where to go next... I think this passion is what puts us well ahead of most...

Anyhow, the way I feel about OC maybe a little less passionate, but it's about getting the most out of something you have already. Truth of the matter is that OC of your computer doesn't really benefit most of us on a day to day basis. Right now, as I am typing this on my 3.87Ghz quad core, I am not solving some complex equation that may help the humanity as a whole nor am I running 30 different apps at the same time. ONE window, one app, nothing else. But, I am thrilled to know that I turned what maybe a mundane system into a really fast machine capable of running most things without even a condensation on my heatsink. And when you can spend less than $1500 on building a computer that is faster than computers that cost 3 times as much, that to me is "bang for the buck". We are all consumers with appetite for speed... More power, more speed, more everything. We need quad cores as much as need 600hp sports car... Good in theory, overkill in practice. But something tells us that it can always be faster...
