Best bet of items you're likely to already have around the house.
DO NOT USE Paper towel -----> Coffee filter (mostly lint free and slightly abrasive)
NO Isopropyl??? ------> Nailpolish remover (acetone or acetone substitute)( solvent)
Q-Tips
Just dampen the Q tip with the polish remover and use it to scrape off most of the gunk.
then use the coffee filter (also dampened) to get rid of the rest, keep turning it over and around to use a "clean spot".

no need for alch if you can't get it. and I would never use any of the suggested solvents
as an alternative to 90% alchohol

I don't see why not, it's not going to damage the metal, even if it has acetone... i dont think

But will definatly make it nice and clean

Well, if you don't use any solvent, then how are you cleaning the TIM off? just scraping the majority off and calling it a day??

Nailpolish remover does work just fine!
(see if your mum/GF has any that is the "no dyes/perfumes" "pure stuff" -obviously the fewer adjuncts in it the better.

Unfortunately a lot of nail polish removers have impurities. Really there's no reason why you can't get isopropyl.

Nail polish remover usually has some moisturizers in it, so it will leave a residue behind.
