Default Cleaning off thermal compound

i know there have been a couple of threads on here about cleaning off thermal compound and everyone pretty much recommeds iso alchohol.

trouble is i don't have any of this stuff here, is it absolutely neccessary? can i not use a normal peice of kitchen paper towel.

what are the risks/outcomes of not using iso alchohol?

thanks.

You can wipe it down with paper towel as good as you can, then use a VERY lightly-dampened towel to get any remaining compound off. Just make sure the surface is spotless (no lint, for example) before you apply new compound.

It depends on how 'baked' the old stuff is. Grease and compounds that don't 'cure' are easy to remove this way. AS5, for example, is a real pain.

Thermal compound can't be cleaned away with just a paper towel. The stuff seeps into microscopic cracks and crevices and then dries therefore you need alchohol or an other suitable TIM cleaner to get rid of the stuff.

If you don't have alchohol you can use the following as a substitute:

Steal $2 from your mom's purse, ride your bicycle down to the local drugstore, and buy some rubbing alcohol.

all drug stores have alcohol. Just get the highest % alcohol there is at the store and you should be ok.

If you use a Q-Tip with lots of pressure, it works to remove TIM well. You'll just have to do it a few times.

Paint thinner works also, just be very careful with it. Any cleaner that evaporates should also work.

Also, use coffee filters instead of paper towels - they don't leave as much, if any, lint.
