Heh, sorry mate. I'm going i7 in a couple of weeks (to give it a go so to speak). This Q9650 will go in my kids' rig. I have a hunch this chip will be in my possession for quite some time

I'm on air. The highest I've pushed it is 4.3 so far. I run at 4ghz 24/7 and find that plenty for gaming and other tasks. Seeing as it only needs 1.216 vcore for 4ghz and temps under load are high 40's why go any higher?

Maximum speed, I upgraded from a q6600 @ 3.861 so I wanted my upgrade to be worth it in speed increase.

your not loading all four cores at 100% with one instance of orthos run btw Rob. get prime in real temp it shows only 49% or something under load. with if you want to test with orthos run two instances of it and set the affinity to two core per instance. i usually run prime and occt as well.

Here we go...
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=529587 (let me know if rejection is an issue...) 4.05ghz@1.4125vcore BIOS (1.38vcore in cpu-z) RAM link'd/sync'd @900mhz [added 9 pm 2/19: batch #: L842B680 pack date: 2/5/09 sry!] cpu 1.4125v fsb 1.4v mem 2.1v spp 1.45v mcp 1.55 ht 1.35 pll 1.6 gtl lane 1 +25 9+ hours, Prime95/small fft Really struggling with clock/vcore...that is, I can run 3.825ghz@1.35v (and probably lower), stable, but I love that taste of 4ghz. I tried to convince myself that 1.37vcore is a polite suggestion, not a stern warning, but it's not working. Too much evidence to the contrary (i.e. actual damaged/fried chips). And my mobo isn't one of the better quad-oc'ers (but I need SLI and I'm not ready for X58). So I'll probably be going back to 3.825ghz, if I can't figure out some way to bring down that vcore. I think I have some GTLREF testing in front of me. I also want to get those other volts down...nb, vtt, pll etc. mcp, ht and pll, in particular, were sort of pulled out of the air - copied from other people, but I didn't necessarily understand their reasons. For example, I "heard" that raising pll can help to lower vcore, but I also heard that pll voltage is one of the silent killers of the 45 nm chips. So any suggestions regarding voltages are welcome. A lot of people have already said this, I just want to add my voice: the brake on these chips is volts, not temps. I'm coming from a q6600, whose temps always held back higher, but still safe voltage. With my OCZ Vendetta 2, the chip has never gone over 59 C; during stress-testing, it usually hovers around the mid-50s (and that's with unusually warm early-Spring weather and ambients). I could easily get this thing stable and temp-safe @4.4ghz with ~1.45vcore, even with this board...but...that vcore. Unless you get a really bad chip, thermals-wise, or a really good oc'er, it seems you'll reach safe volt limits before you get to safe temp limits. Thanks for listening.
