Best bang for a buck is E8400 and bout it for $150 at Microcenter.com. That's what I paid for it in May '08. It was a special advertising though.

Get him a decent Q6600 and force him to overclock it.

Well, obviously a quad is twice as good as a dual.....

j/k, I prefer quads and I still think the Q6600 is the best bang for your buck. If you are gaming almost exclusively and want that last possible FPS, an E8400 or the like is the best just for the extra clock speed. (I still wouldn't build a new PC with a dual)

100% agree, if you want to keep your CPU for a while I also would suggest the Q6600. GTA 4 is the first to fully benefit from a quad and I'm sure many more will in the not too distant future.

I'd go for a quad over dual anyday, unless we're talkin way different clock speeds. If a dual and quad are clocked exactly the same, the quad will ALWAYS perform equal or better than the dual, no exceptions. Now if you're running an app thats only optmized for 2 cores then a higher clocked dual core would slightly outperform a lower clocked quad, but in an app optimized to use 4 cores the lower clocked quad would outperform the dual. The arguement that gets everyone to buy the dual is that "most games don't use 4 cores". Well this is somewhat true, but there are a handful of games currently out that do use all 4 cores, and more and more coming along. Pretty soon dual cores will be out and quads will be the standard, might as well embrace it now.
