Default Dual vs Quad

Ok guys, help me out.

I have a friend who is building a PC, not for overclocking or benching anything, just is trying to game. He has his mind set on a Q8200, though I'm telling him he will be better off getting an E8400 or something similar. He seems to be sticking with the idea that 4>2, but from what I understand, hes not going to get the most out of his quad, and would be better off getting a higher clocked dual core.

Can someone tell me if I'm correct, and maybe show me some info why so that I have some facts to back me up? Thanks.

id take a e8400 over a q8200, but q930 over e8400

newer games are being made for multi cores, atm not to many are out, so everyone is going to yell dual is better

but future proof is quad, tell him to get a q9300

q9550, q6600, or e8400, this are your only option if you want to oc.

I would get quad, because games are becoming to use them and there's not so much of a price difference...

While this article may be a bit dated, heres a link. In some tests, the dual will out power the quad, but not in many. Higher clock speeds are usually favorable, especially in gaming. Usually things are only coded for ~2 cores, so having a quad would be better if you were folding, encoding or rendering media. Personally I have had both a Q6600 and E6600 and with the Q6600 @ 3.6GHz, I have no complaints, but check out the article to get an idea of what would suit your friend best for gaming.

The only processors I would consider buying are the E7200, E8400, Q6600, Q9400, Q9550, and the AMD 920 & 940 Phenom II's.

Quads ftw! I talked a friend of mine out of another dual core to add to his collection and he bought a Q6600. He tells me this all the time that it was the best purchase he ever bought!
