I finally made the switch from my AM2 setup to this nice new DFI P35 and an E7200, but the overclocking seems to be a lot more complex. if anyone can help me out it would be great.
as i said, i've never overclocked an intel chip before, since up to now i've always had AMD. i disabled Thermal Management Control - which i believe is the same as coolnquiet, correct me if im wrong - and im at 9.5 x 280, i really have no idea where or what i should do next. this BIOS has the strangest dram settings i've ever seen, so im hesitant to mess with anything. i found THIS while googling, and it shows some screenies of the BIOS. -Flat

Hmm...I usually leave the RAM timings alone and keep them at what the SPD sets them to and then run a FSB/memory divider to just keep the memory at a working frequency.
At this point, it's time to kick up the FSB and see if it will do what your target was (aim for 3.6GHz to 4GHz). E7200s will do 3.6GHz I'm sure but at a decent amount of voltage from my experience. I can do 3.2GHz on stock voltage without a problem but it simply will not do 3.6GHz without giving it 1.35V (stock is 1.15V).

right now im able to get 9.5 x 290 (2.755ghz), i tried 300 but it was a no go..i dont understand the ram ratio at all, it doesnt say 4:5 or 4:3 or stuff like that, more like 333/800 333/667 200/1066, and other values like that. there isnt even given values for the bus speed, it just says "input a value (between 200 and 700)".

What I do with my bios, in FSB & Memory config is set it to linked & synched, 1:1. I have 800mhz ram so that means my RAM will run at its rated 800mhz at 400mhz (quad pumped its 1600mhz). Now I run my E7200 at 1550mhz (387), with the 9.5 multi, thats 3682mhz. I do this at 1.22vcore. It runs like this 24/7.

sorry, forgot to take that 533 ram out of my sig. It's strictly the corsair ram, which is 800. Like I said though, the ratios that they give are strange.

no problem, i was refreshing the thread and saw you take it out. See if there isn't something in there saying linked & Synched for the memory, this will link the ram speed to your fsb speed. In the type in a number for the fsb part, you said you were at 275, I would start bumping that up slowly, 5,10, or 15mhz at a time (what you feel comfortable with) and boot into windows, do a short test until you lose stability, give it a notch of vcore and continue.

If you don't see anything in your bios for 1:1, linked, synched then I'm sure someone who is familiar with your bios will be able to help. The bios on the evga board I had was really easy to work with and there are tons of guides to them on the net. I have done a few gigabyte bios and they are similar to what you are seeing, I just can't remember how I did them. I have much more experience with the 680i nvidia boards.

What i did when I overclocked my E5200 was to set my ram at "DDR2-667". This would mean that the FSB to RAM divider wouild be something like 2:3 or 5:8. In any case what was important was purposely underclocking the RAM to allow me to isolate instabilities to the CPU. Once I pulled my E5200 up to 240 MHz FSB it so happened that the "DDR2-667" setting became DDR2-800, so I was happy and left things as-is.

i was able to boot into 295 x 9.5, but i blue screened about 5 minutes after windows desktop. 290 seemed stable, though i didnt run any tests. about linked and synced, any ideas where it might be? i didnt notice anything when i was just looking around. seems as though i've already hit a wall... in regards to all the above posts about setting my ram speed to whatever and having it at a certain ratio, you arent reading the full thread..

Setting the RAM speed SETS the ratio.
