Default Overclocking my E8600

so, im using my E8600 at 3.8ghz. stock was 3.33ghz. im also using a asus striker 2 formula and using its AI overclock feature so i just put in the percentage of overclock i would like and the mobo does the rest. i realised the mobo put the vcore to high though so i then changed it to what i think is stable 1.21v. 3.33, 3.6, 3.8 are all stable at 1.21 vcore. but when i jump to 4ghz using the 20% overclock it just fails a stress test with 1 or 2 mins at the most. so I upped the vcore to 1.225 and that failed, 1.2325 failed and 1.2375 failed. why does 4ghz take such a jump in voltage or is there something im missing here?

I'd do the OC in the bios as you have more control that way. Pay attention to what is going on with your memory, you may well be pushing the memory too far. Run Prime95 small FFT to test just the processor (well, mostly the processor) and run memtest or blend (in prime) to test both.

Anyway, to be of much help I'd need to know your other settings (FSB, memory FSB/multiplier etc).

Also watch the temps and report on those at load as well.

1.360V or above is recommended. I had an E8500 and I got my CPU stable at 4.01 Mhz with 1.376V.

Try 1.35 and go down from there.

Did it drop off while running OCCT or at idle? If power saving features are turned on the mobo may drop the multi when additional speed isn't needed. If it dropped off during OCCT, did you get any errors?

no, i wasn't watching my pc at the time, i have C1e and speedstep turned off, and it dropped to 1700 when i came back on occt small data run. no errors were displayed

should i just be happy with 3.8 at 1.21?
or do you reckon the RAM is stressed at 4ghz? even though it says error on core#0/core#1

your chip is capable of a lot more..
use the BIOS, as others suggested.
Put less pressure on your RAM. Who cares about that little 50mhz that probably won't even make a difference.

bump up your volts right up to 1.36 and then increase fsb from there. play with your multi a bit- maybe you might be in a fsb hole
