kinda new to overclocking, just got my self a 780i ftw and a qx9650 and its pretty different from my old set up.
__________________i messed around abit and found some cool stuff with this new bios, i set the cpu multiplier to x12 and put 1.4v through it, c1e and speed step disabled n shizzle. took a while to load windows strangely and i checked cpuz it said i had 4ghz and the vdroop put the volts to 1.3 something and i was on like 30 degrees c. it seemed suspiciously strait forward so i went to download intel burn test and POW the computer blue screened. ![]() so here i sit with 3ghz wondering what to do. does anybody know a more stable way to crank up a qx9650? ![]() (using a 780i ftw) ...tom knows and he wont tell me cos i pester him about every part on my pc LOL

I would try turning down the voltage and multiplier and increase FSB. How high are you trying to hit on the processor?

Well, that's a 45nm chip, so I guess 1.4 cpu volts is actually not too low...not sure if you should lower it, someone with more knowledge of 45nm durability might know more about that. You probably do want to raise your northbridge (SPP in BIOS) voltage, to at least 1.4 volts, and maybe raise your FSB volts to 1.4 (if your FSB is at or above 1600). Also, make sure that RAM voltage/timings/speed are all at default (for now). And you may want to start out with RAM unlinked from FSB, for now. Hope this helps (and anyone else, please feel free to correct me).
__________________edit: you might want to try Prime95 as a stability test, 8-10 hours of small fft test (and remember that even if you "pass" the test, temps may still be excessively high)...should be able to find that in the Downloads section.

45nm mainly are rated 1.365v max however you can go over.. You just risk the cpu dying outright or earlier than was projected.
I have my E8500 @ 1.4v stable 4.25Ghz OC and it's fine.. I might shave a few years off it's total lifespan but honestly it will work long enough for me.

Yeah you could run the memory unlinked so the memory won't be a problem then. Set the memory to factory specs and leave it there, then tweak the CPU.

so il leave my ram at stock speed and change volts of the north bridge,
__________________i want to get my cpu at about 4ghz if not higher should i change the fsb up from 1333 and leave my cpu multiplier at around x9 or x10?

Would 1.3625 lower processor life, or would it be totally safe?

If anyone wonders who "Tom" is. He is referring to me and I told him to post on here and that Oc'ing always ends up to be a trial and error process.
You can only get "Advice" you can't find out exactly how to overclock your CPU to a certain speed just by asking someone. This chip won't do 4Ghz on 1.33v by the way.
