i would sugest format right away, cuz if it is the virus that poped on the grid on april 1st it takes banking info passwords anything like that and it can cause random problems with in the computer it self, allso if you are on a network llike behind a router with other computers jacked in most likly it will be on those as well since that was one of the viruses main intentions was to get all the info it can from everything.

format fresh install and get an antivirus with updated definitions to counter it in the future eg. norton 09 has 2 updates that stop it from infecting

Are the symptoms of Conficker and our symptoms similar?

Lightbulb possible MBR virus

Just finished working on a machine with same symptoms. Try scanning your pc with:

http://rootrepeal.googlepages.com/RootRepeal.zip

Run the program, select File at the bottom, then Scan. Our Dell PC w/ winXP would lock up within an hour or so and emit one continuous beep. Root Repeal found a Master Boot Record virus. Once removed, we ran Malwarebytes and haven't had it lock up yet--12 hours so far!

Wow I'm glad I found this thread, I'm having the same problem as everyone here. I initially thought it was a hardware problem because system restore didn't work.

My computer just starting doing this last week, it usually freezes around 30mins to an hour after running with the mouse still active but if I kept trying to click on stuff my motherboard would beep and my mouse would freeze.

I've been running in safe mode now for a good while now without problems. I'm gonna try winston's fix first and use reformatting as a last resort if nobody can find another solution that works.

Also, I'm not sure if this is related though, did anyone else randomly start having problems with starting up windows live messenger? It started around the same time as I was having these problems.

Do you remember the name of the virus?
