i have this issue as well, and unfortunately didn't get solved with all tips in this thread.
I initially found the (Sinowal) MBR virus with Avira, which I thought removed it. After that I checked with Norman Sinowal Cleaner, which I thought would remove it completely (it still found traces).. Problems remained with crashing + beep.. After that I tried a load of programs like rootrepeal, rootkit unhooker and GMER.. At the moment only GMER still finds traces. It finds malicious code in sector 61, and a copy of mbr in sector 62. I've tried to rebuild mbr with partition table doctor, and with fixmbr, but I can't seem to get it fixed. When I check with GMER under 'Attached Device' it also finds a lot of issues in \Driver\Tcpip\Device\IP , \TCP, \UDP and \RawIP (values for those are fwdrv.sys and ntoskrnl.exe).. So does this mean the virus is in all those processes? Also, I'm on WIN2K, and have 2 500GB disks. I remember when first installing WIN2K something had to be adjusted in the registry to make sure it found the 500GB drives.. Could this have something to do with it or is that a longshot? Don't know what else to do, anyone any ideas? |

Hey guys.
I had this problem all day, and I was about ready to explode from being upset. I registered because I just wanted to say thanks for the solutions offered here. PREVX found and successfully neutrallized the problem, and it seems things are back to normal. I can only hope I am not speaking to soon, and I can only hope it lasts. This saved me a lot of trouble (Was thinking about getting a new power box, and motherboard lol. Saved me some $$$) So again, thanks.

I have battled with this all week,
Symptoms are boot PC no issue, start any program, browser, java game 3d game, no issue. But it seems that when I multitask or switch applications, the screen freezes, mouse can still move and then soon a continous beep and then I have hard reboot. I will try the MBR fix and report back. thanks all for the relentless pursuit of this issue Peace NOTE Last night, I ran UNREAL, the original, the castle flyby and let it run all night 8 hours of constant flyby. never locked up, so I know its not video or RAM but when I exited, about 10 seconds later, half of icons came up and I froze, could move mouse but thats it. no system response, no ctrl alt del. had to shut down so I will let yall know what happens. Prevx 3.0 exposed the MBR virus, then removed but there was remaning malicious code in MBR that symantec 10 could detect now, but not remove it.
It always complained that MBR was infected but could not remove. The way I solved it was to run FIXMBR on primary drive and slave drive, one at a time. It was actually on both drives, after rebooting and checking with Grem fixmbr.exe it said I was clean so I hope this helps someone PEACE |
