I do not have an additional hard drive to test with. Was thinking of buying a cheap external HDD to test with.

I shall try the program when I get home, though I would have though that chkdsk would have found something wrong since it scans the hard drive and the dell hard drive diagnostic tool reported my hard drive to be fine.

Even the anti virus completed after checking every file without crashing (which means it has scanned through every file without a problem, though that doesn't rule out unused disk space)?

Not sure if this is useful but before all this started to happen. My computer shut down by itself for the first time whilst i was listening to music. Ever since then, I have had this problem.

Just an update, I am still experiencing the same exact problem as mattdragon2.

I did the speedfan test and it says my hard drive is working perfectly. I am positive it's not a temp issue so i guess the only possible hardware issue left is ram. Does anyone know of any ram tests? thanks

You can use a program called memtest86. http://www.memtest.org/

You run it while in boot up. I installed it on a usb stick. You need to make the usb stick bootable.

This link will tell you what to do:

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/testing...compatibility/

(just download it and run it on the memory stick and it puts memtest86 on the usb stick automatically. Then in bios change boot option to boot up using usb stick before hard drive.)

This problem is the most annoying thing. I ran every program I have on my PC, and that's a lot. 50+ programs and it didn't crash once.

Then after waiting an hour with 100% CPU full memory used up, I closed everything down. Went to watch a tv show in media player and my crashes.

It's so random it doesn't make sense.

My solution is to go and buy a new Hard drive and power supply.

What worries me is that the problem could be the Motherboard.

Is there anyway to test that it is not the motherboard?

Thanks!

I agree the most frustrating thing about this problem is the fact that it is so random. I can even play some games without an issue and then when I watch a vid on youtube, my comp freezes.

Also I did the memtest and my ram is fine.

I'm thinking its the mobo now...

This same exact thing happened to me last night (Dell Dimension 4700), and I can't figure out what the problem is either. The freezing also appears to be random. I guess there are enough computers out there for the same hardware problem to occur, but this seems like more than a coincidence.

Default Now I have it too

Yesterday I developed the exact same problem as jkaz and soto21. I have run malwarebytes and registry clean up, but nothing. I haven't tried all the suggestions others have offered, but I suspect I'll get the same results: none. Has anyone figured out what's causing this? It's like nothing I've ever seend.

Do you by any chance have any thumb drives in your USB ports. I once had a Dell that gave me fits before I accidentally discovered that it would do wierd things if I left them in the ports. After that I removed them after using them and had no further problems. Worth a shot?

I have the same problem. I think it is a malware issue as I have no problems if logging in with Windows 'Debugging Mode' on. (Hit F8 when re-booting, until you get the different start up options, select Debugging mode, and log in as usual).

I'm curious to know if this 'works' for others (the slowdown, beep and freeze stops). Then I'll be curious to know if anyone can find the problem. I've tried all virus, malware, spyware, etc scans with no success. Currently I'm trying anti-rootkit checkers. (gmer 1.0.15 )

So you tried different GPUs? Cause that's kinda what it sounds like to me -- a GPU issue. Does the mobo have onboard video? Did you try that?
